- Sugismama256 contributionsVisitors must see this museum to understand AlaskaThis is a nice small museum that illuminates Alaska Native life past and present. The outside village exhibits showcase traditional and recent types of shelter for the many different groups in Alaska. Inside you learn about food, clothing and traditions, and the impact of colonialism on religion and language. It’s more of a celebration of resilience and native cultures than a deep look at the harmful past. The theatre shows many videos and I only watched one but they all looked interesting. A great 1-3 hour visit. When they’re having live demonstrations would be fun to go.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- Janet HLos Angeles, California2 contributionsA must visit place with childrenMy children loved our visit to the Alaska Native Heritage Center. We took our time and packed a lunch. There was a performance when we arrived with drums. So many interesting things to see. We did not do a tour but did get a chance to speak with several knowledgable people. They gave us a deeper insight into what was presented.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 January 2024
- Carol G21 contributionsIntroduction to Alaskan LivingFREE! The outside villages provide an excellent overview of how the various native Alaskan tribes lived. I enjoyed seeing the items inside each of the residences. There are several totem poles, sleds, and a very nice gift shop.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 29 January 2024
- Mito G13 contributionsWell presented workThis was an excellent facility to learn more about the native Alaskan tribes history. Several lodges , inside and outside exhibits , and demonstrations given by the young people of the clans. To see the young people so knowledgeable of their culture and able to share with the visitors was great. We learned so much from the visit .Quyana (Thank you, Yup'ik) for stopping by! We are thrilled you enjoyed your stay, and are so proud of our awesome Culture Bearers in Training representing their cultures well! - Michael YStebbins, Alaska247 contributionsImmersing into the Alaskan CultureI went there at around 1:40pm and I missed the group guided tour around the miniature village. I thought I will not enjoy it being solo or without a guide but it turned out to be better because I had the chance to be in those small houses and went through the narrow tunnels all by myself. It was a different experience seeing those small houses and looking into what the Alaskan natives had back in the days. I waited for the dance and native games presentation after the mini tour at their small theater and it was an inspiring show.Mähsi cho (Thank you, Hän Hwëch’in), for visiting ANHC! We are so happy you enjoyed listening to our amazing and knowledgeable Culture Bearers and Culture Bearers in Training! - Wendy S5 contributionsWorth the stop - plan for more timePlease plan on spending several hours here. There is so much to learn and I sadly did not leave enough time. I loved the examples of the native games and the dancing that the youth did. I also wish I had bought more art from the locals that were selling it there. I did not find anything else on my trip that came close to the artistry I found here, nor the prices!Quyana (Thank you, Yup'ik) for coming to ANHC, we appreciate you for coming and learning about our peoples!Written 17 June 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 June 2024
- ACT10 contributionsHighly recommend this cultural experienceThis was an incredibly informative and fascinating outing for our family with teens. We observed a demonstration by young people who participate in the Native Youth Games. The exhibits were powerful and empowering, and I appreciate that ANHC hosts many Native artists and artisans, selling their items and creations. Most interesting for me were the Village Sites, where we saw re-creations of historic dwellings from nations all over Alaska and learned about their way of life.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 July 2024
- Carl WOwatonna, Minnesota772 contributionsInformative information and enjoyableVery interesting and informative while keeping everyone interested. We learned a lot about the Native Culture and had fun while learning. There were high school age students that played native drums and danced and sang that was good to hear and learn the culture. Other displays are very interesting also, and our Grandsons liked it as well.Thank you for sharing your experience! - RavenitoCharlotte, North Carolina545 contributionsReally fantastic, worth a visitI was a little bit skeptical going in because it seems like the place is run by teenagers. The demonstrations are all done by teenagers, the guides are all teenagers, the only ones who aren't teenagers are the ones working the shops. But I tell you what, those kids really do a good job. The guides are really knowledgeable and it's really interesting to talk to them about the village they grew up in, hear their stories that have been passed down from their loved ones, and listen to their experiences trying to keep their traditions alive in a modern world where so much has been done to wipe their heritage out. As for the demonstrations, I especially enjoyed the Native Games demonstrations. We had the good fortune to have a multiple-game world record holder there for the demonstrations and I was awed by his abilities. I never even knew the games existed before I came here and it was so interesting to learn about their history and how they carry on those traditions with the games today. For that matter I learned so much in general about Alaskan Natives here. I never knew how little I actually knew but it was eye-opening to realize my ignorance on the subject and wonderful to learn so many new things. I'm really glad I decided to come here, it was a wonderfully informative experience.Thank you for stopping by! At the Heritage Center, we are so proud of our next-generation culture bearers who are so devoted to their traditions through the games, dance, and tours and we are happy to see you recognized their love and passion! We hope to see you again sometime! 😊Written 26 August 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 August 2024
- Jill H153 contributionsNative Alaskan HeritageVery interesting. there were continuous dance performances. Native cultural displays for several different tribes. Lighting was very good in the display areas but a bit too bright. there were also local artisans making and selling their crafts. All in all a very nice place to visit.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 September 2024

It is over priced and poorly presented. I learned very little about the peoples of Alaska. The so called tour guides were just young silly teenage girls who knew next to nothing about the artifacts and were very poor public speakers. I felt like I was suffering through a poor junior high drama. The center needs professional tour guides with a deep understanding of native cultures. Save your time and money go to the Anchorage museum which is half the cost and presents native culture much better.

Visited in June 2021..we really didn’t see much. I think since they were closed last year they are not up to speed. Not a lot to see indoors and the outdoor exhibits needed some TLC…expensive at $25 per person..

Overpriced. And after their highly sexualized drag queen show for children I will never recommend this in good faith again. Performance by Ivanna Kissacok; not joking. They had the audacity to make the claim that Alaskan Natives never had words for male or females. Right.

This museum is a gift. There were demonstrations of native story telling, singing and dancing. It was a true emersion experience. Definitely worth the visit. Beautiful look at native architecture and the native's relationship to the natural world. If you are in Anchorage, check it out.

When my sister and I booked our Alaska tour, we knew that we'd see spectacular scenery and wildlife, but we'd also expected to see information on Native Heritage. We didn't see any until the last day of our trip when we came here. It was extremely interesting, from the villages around the lake with Junior (who was an excellent guide, very very knowledgable and very very nice) to the performances. Everyone was helpful and we enjoyed meeting and talking to the artists working there. The deck was the perfect place for an afternoon snack, and after days of crowded bus and boat tours, this was such a peaceful respite. AND we saw a young bear swim across the lake!!

Beautiful facility in a beautiful setting, a short drive from town (we had a ride service for $20). Unlike how many museums are overwhelming with too much ‘stuff’ to take in, ANHC has just enough. Take the free guided tour of the village, showcasing reproductions of several different styles of dwelling, and learn about the variations in lifestyle and material circumstances. There are also multiple short films playing in the theatre as well as a schedule of live demonstrations. I particularly enjoyed the ‘games’ demo, and the short film about qayaks and canoes. They are on a couple of times a day. Guides are friendly and informative. Cafe is fine. I would have enjoyed a chance to eat some indigenous cuisine but you can’t have everything! Not cheap ($29/19 adult/kid) but it supports the center’s mission of community building and was well worth it. We spent about 4.5 hours. Nice gift store too.

The Alaska Native Heritage Center provides an excellent mix of activities to learn about the culture and history of the Native Alaskan people. Indoors, there are rotating hourly performances with traditional dances, games, and music. The indoor section also includes informative museum-style exhibits and an area to meet and purchase art and jewelry from Native Alaskan artisans. Outdoors, the center has constructed an example home from each of the major Native Alaskan groups - my wife and I loved the opportunity to explore the variety of housing from log cabins to underground shelters. Lastly, the gift shop has beautiful souvenirs made by Native Alaskan people; we purchased a print of an orca and met the Tlingit artist inside the museum. Overall, we loved our time and would highly recommend the Alaska Native Heritage Center to anyone visiting Anchorage.

Cost was a little expensive at $29.00 for adult, but since it goes to support the important mission of preserving information about native cultures, I think it is worth the cost. The inside of the museum is somewhat unimpressive. There were performances that could have been much shorter and more enthusiastic. And, the displays are not marked very well. It felt more like a Modern Native Art Museum, which was pretty cool, but not sure what the intention is. The best part of the experience was the guided tour around the Grounds at a number of examples of homes and tools used by the Alaskan Natives. Our tour was lead by Paul, and he was interesting and very knowledgeable. I think in 5-10 years this could be an amazing Center. But, even as it is now, I think it is well worth the entrance fee.

We had an enjoyable experience. We took the free tour and watched some of the performances.
The place is not that large. I think if we did not take the tour and watch the performances I do not think we would have enjoyed it as much.
The tour guide adds a lot to the experience by providing background information on the various cultures and personal background experience.

Local high school kids narrate the tour of sample buildings used by the native alaskans. Their presentations need a bit of polish but the content is good. Very interesting. We saw some native Alaskan dancers. Must see .

We will be in Anchorage Sept 13-17, 2017. Is the Center open then and what activities are there?
Written 8 May 2017
according to their website which I was just looking at, yes. To get a full schedule of activities, presentations, go to their website.

Is it open during the winter season as well?
Written 23 March 2017
I am planning a visit next week. About how long would you say it takes to visit the Center? For instance, is the average visit 2-3 hours, or is it more of an all-day outing? It will be 2 adults only, no children.
Thanks!

The place itself is probably a 2 hr visit with kids. It's a free shuttle from town but takes about 15 min each way.
Written 28 August 2016
I've heard there's a free shuttle from the Anchorage visitor center, but can't find a schedule anywhere.
Written 27 June 2016
There is a free shuttle from in front of the Anchorage visitor center; however, I don't recall the times specifically. There is a sign where the shuttle picks up that lists the times and there are flyers with the list available, as well. Enjoy!

What are hours of the Baker Team Tour? We will be at the center in August 10th, on Wednesday, 9 am to 12:30 pm. What is the best time to ensure that we will have a tour (10 of us).
Thanks
