Vary nice part of town

The place is impressive and this is a beautiful part of town well worth visiting, sort of surprize in such a small town.

10th century church full of artifacts and information. The underground crypt is interesting and spooky at the same time. Great information throughout the church and crypt as well as the monks' residence/dining hall next door.

Being a Sunday when we visited we were not able to spend long in the Abbaye. However, it is quite plain in decor within but like so many French churches the altar area is magnificent. Turning round to walk back to the entrance there mounted quite high up on the nave wall is the beautiful organ console - very intricately... More

Such a beautiful abbey in such a small town. The stained glass windows are absolutely beautiful. We visited the crypt but had no idea about the light switch ! Don't miss going up the tower to the first floor to see the aisle from above just as well it's not possible to go higher when you see the staircase.

The abbey church of St Philibert is one of the most beautiful examples of Lombard (sorry to bring the family into this...) architecture in southern Burgundy... the Lombard stone masons brought to help build the Cluny abbey then stayed around and were responsible for hundreds of churches in this region. Their speciality are tall, slender steeples and decorative blind arches.... More

We stopped in Tournus for a short while and parked in front of the Abbaye (1€ for 1 hour). There are only a few parking spaces here but you may be lucky. The Abbey is a delight to marvel at both inside and out. Don't miss the crypt (light switch on left hand side of stairs as you go down)... More

The Abbey and its surrounding buildings were an ancient Benedictine monastery built in the 9th and 10th centuries – but have a surprisingly modern feel as they are simply decorated (almost stark) and very light and airy. There is no entrance charge (though of course donations are appreciated) and no efforts are made to commercialise the environment by selling postcards... More

I can imagine that the intendant of the Metropolitan Museum in New York would, apart from his budget for a few years, gladly give his left arm for an opportunity to take down this building brick by brick, ship it to the States, and re-assemble it in New York. The chances of that, however, are nil. This is an amazing... More

this abbey is immense and stark but breathtakingly beautiful. It is surrounded by lovely shops; well worth a visit.
