The Bear Creek Weir was an unexpectedly enjoyable stop for me on our trip to Alaska. It was really neat to see the salmon swimming upstream and jumping to try to advance. We saw multiple tour groups stop here and it does not take long.

What an unexpectedly nice stop. There's a little parking area on the side of the road and you can see salmon in the creek on both sides of the road. Watching the salmon jumping up the weir is so entertaining and we found ourselves rooting for them like "come on little buddy, you can do it!". You can spend as little or as much time as you like, it's definitely worth a stop though.

Never new what a weir was but happened upon this place as we were renting a house right up the road. The creek is stuffed full of fish who are swimming up stream to go spawn. The young man at the fishery provided us a rundown of how it all works. Worth a stop if you are in the area.

We stayed near here and enjoyed watching the salmon jumping up the falls (and hanging out in the creek). It is easy to get to and easy to park, no hiking or anything required but a nice payoff. A good quick stop on the way to/from Seward if you're driving.

You can spend as little or long as you want here. We ended up going twice. Seeing the immense amount of salmon swimming in the water and making giant leaps was something I’d never seen in real life. It is also free. The second time we went, we were able to talk to a couple of workers who described how the weir worked and how they worked with the hatchery. Across the street there was some more of the stream to watch and a cool log to walk over.

A local in Seward told us to check this place out. It's one of the structures where they monitor the almon population. Staff were friendly and informative, explaining every step of the process. It was worth stopping just to see the stream below the weir PACKED with salmon.

Not only is this weir key to maintaining fish levels in Bear Lake and Resurrection Bay, it is fascinating to see all of the fish trying to get upstream to spawn. Look for a bridge and a shack on the side of the road. Make sure to go around the front of the building to read about the process. The Salmon turn pink before they spawn and you can see dozens of them swimming upriver and jumping onto the fish ladder. After you are done there, head up to Bear Lake where you can see more salmon stocking activities and get in a good hike.

When the sockeye salmon are running, you can view them right here at Bear Creek Weir just a short drive from Seward. Seeing the salmon jump up the falls in person is an amazing experience. Be on the lookout for the many eagles that live here too. Be aware of bears for where there are salmon, there are bears!

We were here in late August and there was still a lot of salmon running the creek. I’ve read that you may also spot bear and eagles here but we didn’t see either although there was fresh bear scat. Definitely worth a quick stop.

This was a nice free activity on our way into Seward. We were actually there at the end of the salmon run so we did not actually see a lot of activity at the Weir but enjoyed seeing the salmon in the stream across the road. This plaçe is very small and not at all flashy but it was interesting to see so many salmon still trying to struggle up stream.
