Ston is a beautiful village in the Croatia countryside containing the Ston Salt Works. It is so special that my wife insisted that we buy 5 kilograms of it!

Ston salt works covers an impressive area and produces tons of sea salt each year by evaporating sea water. This is one of the oldest industries in the World relying purely on man power. The salt made by this process is of the finest quality and was an economically valuable resource, and was used as a currency in the past.
There is a small audio-visual display af the salt pans for which a small fee is payable.

Ston Salt Works is located in the surroundings of the old town, in the Dalmatian Coast. It is possible walk around this place and see very nice views of them from walls. Really, the change.of colours are very beautiful. Pitifully, we came here at the end of October (low season) and it was not possible to visit it, but we could walk around it. I would like to return and see this part.

This place is amazing. You should watch the video shown left side next to the entrance.
If You don't see anybody just go to the office under the balcony of the old building on the right side of the entrance. They even sell the pure sea-salt. No iodine added ;-) (1 kg of the fine salt was roughly 1.5 EURO)

Salt pans are the oldest in Europe. 1/3 of Dubrovnik Republic income came from salt. Have been producing for 4,000 years. 58 pools divided into five groups.

This is such a historic place, that we felt it was worth a visit.
The short documentary n the television gives the history of these saltworks, and then you can walk around at your own pace.
My sister the chef, bought some salt because she said that the taste is really something special.!!

Big ponds of water evaporating to harvest salt. When salt was as valuable as gold, this may have been interesting.

You can get a good view of this ancient salt works from the Ston bridge over its little moat. Simply no reason to pay! Salt works are pretty self-explanatory.

We were on a tour and were given the history of the salt fields and an explaination of the process for producing the salt. We decided not to pay to go in as we could see the works from the entrance and paying to walk around the fields seemed unecessary.
