Beautiful pier. Great for swimming. Lots of swimmers meet up in the morning around 7am or 8am every day to do the 1.2 mile return (there's a 2.4 mile Ironman option too but the last buoy is hard to sight.)

Beautiful beach next to pier.
Amazing colours of the sea and very soft sand.
Really good place to relax few hours from work on board.
In few meters there are many shops and restaurants in which is possible enjoy all day long.
Hope next time to can do the tour with the submarine.

We ended up here for the end of the night. Cannot really see the sunset from here, but a cool spot to see the coast and watch locals fish

Grab a sandwich at that little shop by the Marriott and head here to take in the view. There's also a public washroom that is usually open.

Nice walk to see Kamehameha spot. Also where iron man starts and ends. Cruise ships and tour boats go out here, Saw dolphins in bay. Beautiful sunsets on ocean and back on mountain. Start your walk on Ali I from here. No place to park here though.

A busy little pier with people swimming, and sunning, and enjoying the sun shine. Parking is about non existential so park else where and explore the area on foot.

Anything headed to the water starts from here. There is a lot of activity and people. It is in the center of town. It is pretty famous as this is the starting point for the Irom Man competition each January.

First, the pictures on Tripadvisor are not only not of the pier, but not even the islands. There are no offshore islands anywhere along to Kona or Kohala Coast and I can't even tell you where these photos were taken.
Populated by the now politically correctly called "homeless" you will be accosted by violent and scary people who will shout obscenities at you. The government plans to put these people in project housing where any legitimately homeless people can be subject to this abuse.
You're going to need to go here is you want to swim (a nice 1.2 mile course) or go on one of the marine activities, but move quickly and stay in groups.
I'll mark that there are restrooms, but when I went into one today, I was accosted by a delusional ne'erdowell screaming at me to get out. Be advised.

We are coming for one day on a cruise. Is there enough to do that is walkable? We will want to see more than shopping. Maybe a beach, some snorkeling, some culture/history?

Robin C did an excellent job answering your question. Take a cab to Kahaluu'u Beach Park (aka Turtle Beach) which is SUPER snorkeling. There are vendors there for supplies and food and excellent water. Easy in and out if you stay off the rocks. Have fun. About 4 miles from pier.

Hi.....We did not take a trolley so I don't know about it at all. We just walked around once we got off the ship at the pier.
