Park offers a couple different hikes. The best, IMO, is the 4 mile hike through the Kilauea Iki crater. It is a very unique landscape and takes only a couple hours - can be a bit strenuous for people not used to walking. The view from the Volcano Lodge (across the street from the visitor's center) should not be missed... More

This is a huge trail approximately 175 miles along the coast of Hawaii. Not totally connected but way fun to start/finish your hike from any area your near hotel. I started at the Mauna Kea and used it to go north a couple hours and then back to the resort. Passed many small hideaway beaches known only to hikers and... More

This is one of the things you flew 5,000 miles for-- learning of the history of our 50th state. No other island has the early history like here. Go with time to hear the stories and understand the people who make up the Hawaiians.

We stopped by this park on a whim as we passed. We were pleased with the historical information posted along the trail. It provided some insights into life as a native Hawaiian in the distant past. It was a fairly long trail, but if you are a history buff, worth the effort.

I ran and hiked this trail from the Mauna Kae Beach Hotel both directions. South for about a mile between Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beaches is fairly rough but we did it in slippers (local for flip-flops) and has some great ocean views and also views into some very nice homes from the back side. Fun to see how the... More

We love hiking, but it appears, at least on the Big Island of Hawaii, trails are sparse, not necessarily well marked, and often parts are on the public property so it's sometimes unclear: do you, or don't you? This trail is miles long and follows the coastline to offer great views and many beaches or public shoreline. There are many... More

This stop should be on everyone's list that visits the island. There is so much history on the Big Island and this is one of those sites. A beautiful walk and very relaxing and spiritual.

It may be hard to find but it offers amazing views of the ocean between calm beaches. On one side you may see very fancy houses and bungalows with lush greens and on other lava rocks with very dry vegetation and the wild ocean.
