The lava road can be travelled by any car just go slow (Jeep or SUV ideal as there are lots of ruts). We were only able to snorkel briefly as the current was too strong the day we visited, however we heard it was usually calm and a great snorkel spot. We also took the lava path to Maka beach... With a sandy beach and a sandy bottom, a nice surf break, and clean facilities, this is by far our favorite beach on the island. Go during the week and get there early if you want to park near the access. The only negatives are a tricky short hike to the sand, and no lifeguards.

Beach is nice, but keep walking 20 mins through the hot lava field for sand dunes and an unbelievable beach that is the softest sand i've ever laid my feet upon.

Sheet balls. Best beach ever. No one there. Driving over ancient Pahoehoe. Need 4x4. Cried leaving. Magical. Every other life experience results in suicide. Heaven.

This beach is beautiful and well worth the bumpy ride to the trailhead. We had a jeep, but i saw some very small rental cars that made the trip, so don't let the bumps keep you away. Its about a 5-10 minute walk from the parking lot. Porta potty facilities. The sand is very course and loose and makes for... More

The rough road keeps most people out and I am ok with that. However, make the effort. You will not be disappointed once you get there. Be ready to dodge small canyons and holes on the drive in. Just take your time. We love it!!!!!!!!!!!

The only white sand beach we found on the Big Island on the Kona side. A mile north of the airport, down a road that was paved, once - a long long time ago. Really rough and cratered (way bigger than potholes). But if you brave the drive (slowly) you are richly rewarded with a soft sand beach with trees... More

We spent our final day in Hawaii on this wonderful beach. It may be the greatest beach in Hawaii. It is so worthwhile to make the trip. Be aware... the road is difficult. You must go slow and watch for deep holes in the lava.

Spent a pleasant morning at beach. Was Apple to rent beach chairs and umbrella onsite. Quiet, family friendly beach. Waves were unusually high which made for a great visit but concerned the lifeguards who frequently warned about rip tides and urged bathers not to go in deep water.
