The original reso was cancelled due to the big surf but we rescheduled and so glad we did. From the check in at the shop to getting in the water at the bay what a great adventure. These folks took their time getting us all up on waves and I would recommend Kona Mike’s to anyone interested in catching some wave and having a great time…. Thx Gang!

Convenient location right by the beach. Max was the surfing instructor for our 3 girls and he was very down to earth, easy to talk to, and offered other ideas for us to check out around the island. Good amount of time was spent getting the girls ready for the lesson and he got each of our girls catching some waves in no time. Watching from the shore, we could see he kept our girls and another young surfer together, got them going, and even gave them a little “boost” if they weren’t moving fast enough to catch the wave. Money well spent for the time and effort Max gave to our girls. Would definitely recommend Kona Mike’s and Max for surf lessons on the Big Island

The instructors at Kona Mike's did a great job of exuding the spirit of aloha while at the same time being both informative and extremely physically helpful out in the waves. The end result is that you are able to stay calm and relaxed while undertaking the taxing and difficult process of learning to surf. The end result is that you are guaranteed to catch a few waves with these guys and have a good time doing it. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

I booked some surfing lessons with Kona Mike during the Holidays. I was able to book a semi-private lessons for three at 8:00am on short notice. The instructor was there waiting for us at the designated spot. He gave some on-land instructions and proceeded to get my kids in the water and on the surfboards. They surfed for a 2 full hours and had a great time. Recommend Kona Mike's.

My boys felt like there was very little instruction even when they asked specific questions. They ended the session fifteen minutes early (was supposed to be 10:30-12:30 and they pulled everyone out at 12:15). The photographer took 1,425 photos and exactly five of my son and zero of my son-in-law. I was so ready to buy photos so this was a huge disappointment. There were multiples (like 35) of several students. Overall, they had a great time but it wasn’t really due to the instruction.

The two instructors for the seven of us in a group lesson were great and were more than enough to give us all the help and encouragement we needed. The location was not so great, however. We met by a van on the narrow shoulder of a very busy road and our dry-land instruction was also by the side of the road on a narrow strip of dirty sand by the water. The surf break was also crowded, with at least two other companies giving group lessons as well. Regardless, the instructors made the overall experience a postive one my kids and I enjoyed our surf session.

The instructor was amazing! He took the appropriate amount of time, to make sure our son was comfortable on the board, before going into the water. Once in the water, on the second wave, he was up and riding. As his skill advanced, they went out farther to the bigger waves. Never once were we concerned about his safety in the water. Great experience, we will for sure do it again on our next trip!

We had a great experience with our surf instructor Eli. It was my husbands and my first surfing lesson and we were both a little nervous at first, but Eli made us feel right at ease on the board. I shopped around for a while before settling with Kona Mike’s because they gave the best price for a longer lesson, but it didn’t feel like we got any less of an experience or instruction than the more expensive places around.

Our teen took an individual lessson. He had great things to say about the instructor who got him out there and up almost immediately and then coached him for almost 2 hrs. My son would have had a hard time with a lot of beach learning so this was perfect...explain, demonstrate and do. We thought it was funny that we followed directions to meeting spot, which led us to a small historic church and a long row of trucks with surfboards to " met" the instructor in an unmarked truck by asking " are you Mike?". But they were super organized and ready for us

I have two teenagers who I signed up for surf lessons. My 16 year-old daughter had surfed before so I signed her up for the group lesson. They told be they had 1 semi-private lesson available. Since my son hadn't ever surfed, this seemed like a good option. The problem is that when they got out there, my son got no more instruction than any of the others in the group. they just lumped them all together. My husband and I watched from the shore and both my kids noticed this. The kids had a lot of fun and they were safe, which is my biggest priority, but they shouldn't have charged us $40 extra for his lesson. Just make sure you get what you pay for and have fun!
