We visited the Basílica St. Michael (a former Benedictine monastery in Upper Austria) on our "Sound of Music" tour out of Salzburg. Mondsee Abbey was founded in 748 by the Duke of Bavaria on the ruins of a Roman settlement. The late Gothic church which stands there now was constructed in the 15th century and has two twin towers that stand 107 feet high. The basilica became famous because of the wedding scene in the movie "Sound of Music" with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. More than 200,000 people visit the large cathedral each year, making it reportedly one of the most photographed churches in the world. The entry is free, but donations are encouraged. In 2005, Pope John Paul II upgraded the church to a basilica. (PaM)

my wife and I are big fans of the movie “The Sound Of Music,” and when we included Salzburg in our travel plans, we knew there would be several stops at filming locations. The basilica is outside of Salzburg proper, and easy to get to. There’s even free parking if you look hard enough. It will only take a few minutes to walk around inside, snap a few pics, and be on your way recommended

I visited this huge church whilst staying in the hotel next door. Mondsee is such a beautiful village by the lake and it is blessed with this wonderful church. Although most people will recognise this as the church where the wedding took place in the Sound of Music film, this is a beautiful place irrespective of that. It is much larger than one would expect from such a small population base. It is free to enter but they ask for 1 euro donation which is tiny for the experience.

This minor basilica is a baroque work of art in the town of Mondsee. It used to be a collegiate church, but today it is a magnificent church building and the town's landmark. When you enter the nave through the shop, you are overwhelmed by the splendor of the many altars, sculptures and pictures. The windows and organ are also very beautiful. It is really worth spending some time here to appreciate the variety of works of art.

I’d first visited the Basilika St Michael in December 2007, as part of the Sound of Music tour.

This year I’d returned in May for a second look in the summer but most importantly our choir got to perform Mozart Requiem in the Basilica at an evening concert.

I took a bus (Bus 140) from Salzburg’s main bus stop. It was a 50 minutes ride to Mondsee.

From the Mondsee bus station it was a short walk (upslopes) to the church.

The facade and twin towers were designed in Baroque style whereas the inside of the church was Gothic which made Basilika St Michael so unique. Both renovations took place at different times.

I was struck by the heavy black and gold colours used in the sculptures and frames. The interior walls were painted in pink colour.

The acoustic in this church was truly amazing. The choir didn’t have to sing very loud to get their voice projected.

Check the church’s calendar to see if you could time your visit with a concert. It will be a very special experience.

How do you solve a problem like Maria? With these words ringing in our ears we arrived at the very church used in The Sound Of Music for the wedding between Maria and Captain Von Trapp. We were on a Sound of Music Tour that started from nearby Salzburg and this was one of our furthest destinations for the day. It’s certainly a pretty place with bright colours set against vibrant blue skies. We have a write up with opictures on our personal blog which can be found on our profile.

Wanted to visit this Basilika as it was used in the Wedding Scene from The Sound of Music. Free to entre, but donations of E1 per person are asked for. It is quite stunning and beautiful, but over the top. Glad that I have been, would just like to watch the film again

I was staying in a hotel which was neighbouring to this church. One Sunday I attended the church mass (Sunday ceremony), the priest of the church visited me after the mass at my hotel. He was so impressed to know that I am the first Hindu to attend his mass.
The priest discussed with me and later took me to his house and gave me a bicycle to travel to the surrounding places, he also had a horse and offered me a ride.

You wouldn't expect a basilica in a small village like Mondsee.
Very beautiful yellow church with two towers that really stands out when the sun shines on it.
Within a very spacious and lavish interior, which also made Hollywood decide to have Maria's marriage to Captain von Trapp solemnized at this location.

We were on a Christmas Market River Cruise with AMAWaterways and stopped here on the way to visit the Christmas Markets in Salzburg.
This gothic church was constructed in the 15th century. It became famous because the wedding scene in the "Sound of Music" was filmed here with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
