About
One of Austria's top 3 destinations amidst the Alps The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is like an ornament of ribbons located between green mountain pastures, colourful flower meadows, rocky rubble, ice and show. It nestles up against hills, follows the course of the natural ground and fits the mountains like a glove. Whooshing waterfalls, the shrill whistling of marmots and the howling wind in the summit regions create an unforgettable high alpine soundscape. And then, all of a sudden, he appears: his majesty, the Grossglockner, the black mountain. Join us for a journey beyond compare up high to the perpetual ice of the glacier!

Totally worth it! Always check before going whether it’s open, which peaks are closed and fill your gas tank (or charge your car) before entering the park. The entrance fee varies by the season. In May we still had lots of snow but no need for special
Apparel if you just plan to drive and occasionally get out for pictures. Also, the restaurant with the view to Grossglockner is highly recommended as well as the Wildlife Park at the paytoll/entrance of the Alpjne Road.

Paid Alpine road (45€ by car, summer 2024) but worth all the money spent!
A continuous show x all 48km of road... lakes, waterfalls, incredible views, a glacier, a museum, many restaurants shops and hotels.
P.s is a scenic road, not a track! Go slowly and enjoy the view during the stops because it is a challenging road.

Great!
Beatutiful scenery, stop as often as you want for pictures. Fee is 45euro for a regular car. You can pay at the site where they give you a map over the route, we estimated 2 hours, but it took us 4 hours with all the stops and lunch.
The route up to Edelweiss spitze was quite scary to drive, and so full of people up there so we couldn’t park….
This was a great day we will remember!

Do you want to visit the Grosglockner?
- Make sure you have Kärntenkaart (for 2 weeks €78)
- Leave really on time.
- Go through Heiligenblut.
- Park your car at the Steinbock museum.
- Visit museum. Is interesting especially for the kids. Buy a ticket for Grosglockner right away (€43 but you have K.Map €39)
- Go with the 2 cable cars (sit K.kaart) to 2600m altitude. Just brilliant Loose price €41
- Some food and/or drinks on local terrace.
-Start your drive to Grossglockner to the glacier.
Beautiful views along the way. Plenty of places to stop.
Top spot Murmeltiere. Bring peanuts she vibrated deliciously. Carrots beet more.
Very nice pictures to msk there despite the considerably less ice and snow.
When you're done, you can still take the winding road. Is also breathtaking.
Drive the same way back is much shorter. So don't drive out of the barrier.
Really a yellow day bite

We went on a day coach trip from Zell am See at the end of May, the beginning of the summer season. We had very poor visibility but it was still worth doing with the hairpin bends and the huge banks of snow either side of the road in many places. After passing through the tunnels, visibility did improve somewhat so we were able to appreciate some of the amazing scenery. On reaching the end point at Kaiser Franz Josefs Hohe, we were able to see the Pasterze glacier well but sadly not the Grossglockner itself.
It was snowing at most of our stops during the day so we were glad we had appropriate clothing including gloves.

Countless hairpin turns up to the Hoch Tor (high gate) and down the other side. Look at the Roman road markers as you go to think about that level of history (this was one of the 3 main passes over the central alps). We've done the drive both directions and it never fails to thrill. Jaw dropping landscapes of alps, glaciers and waterfalls. St. Bernard, Timmelsjoch, some of the Dolomites are the other memorable alpine drives over passes. Zermatt is probably better overall scenery, but it's also much more costly. Tip #1: this drive is far superior to trains that go beneath everything for seeing the Alps. Tip#2: Not at all for those who don't like innumerable hairpin turns...seriously, take the train, or take lots of Dramamine. :)

This is a high adrenaline road trip with spectacular views of the Alps. As a word of caution, wait for decent weather as it can be hair raising if it clouds in or mists up.
Loved it, was a highlight of our Austrian road trip.

Most beautiful car route in Europe is said. And we found it absolutely true! You pay about €40 for the ride to the Großglockner. Along the way you will encounter waterfalls and places where you can also get off. Once at the top, you can spot murmurer bull. We spotted about 6 of them! Very nice.
Too bad the ice and snow has melted so much in recent years. A mountain away you can walk in the snow. Is still a drive away by car.

Travelled with my Wife & Dog on our Motorbikes. Decided to go on our Honda C125 super cubs. Fully loaded up with camping gear. We got lucky for this time of year April/May 2024. Stunning weather, with blue skies, & gorgeous sunshine, slightly chilly of course, but who cares we had a good time. Plenty of Snow, stunning scenery along the way, plenty of fun twisty turns too. Whoohoo!! 👍 Met loads of people along the way. Had food right at the top of the pass, made 2 snowmen ⛄️. Can't wait to do it again sometime. Totally recommend, well worth the money spent. Loads of gift shops & museums along the way didn't do them all.

No cloud...bright sunshine...snow without end...panoramic indescribable...fabulous. Rarely seen anything so beautiful. Hardly any operation. We were completely to ourselves the whole way. Once in a Lifetime experience...

We are traveling to Salzburg and then on up to Rothenburg ob de Tauber. Is this a pleasant drive or should we take a train? We would like to incorporate the Grossglockner Alpine Road somehow! We will be traveling in June. Thank you! Starting in Munich.

Hi, I was planning to take the Glocknerbus on 18th September but was informed that it would not be operating on that day due to an event. I'll be based in Zell am See for 4 days. Please let me know if the Postbus 650 takes the same route as the Glocknerbus on its way to the wildlife park or if there are any other bus tours from Zell am See on this route..
Thank you

Hi, are there hotels on the grossglockner alpine road, between the two formal entrances? If not, is there a recommended hotel near the south entrance?

Hi. We are planning to go to salzburg from innsbuck and planning to cover krimmi waterfalls, drive to alpine road and then spend some time in Zell am see.
My question is about driving the alpine road. Should we go to zell am see and drive to alpine and come back same way from franz hoze view point or there is another route ? Also do we need to buy 40 eur ticket for once ?

Hi! Is it safe to take whole route of High Alpine Road with 9 months old baby? I know that the highest point is around 2500m. Are there any stops with nice view and place to stay for some time under 2000m?

How was the road in September? Any greenery still or mostly snow? We're considering a September trip.
Thanks!!

We travelled Grossglockner the second week of September. There was a bit of snow on the peaks, but not a lot. There was lots of green....with a bit of fall colours beginning to appear. It was beautiful!
