We were in South Dakota just because and wanted to see some sights. I wasn't sure about Custer State Park, but figured it might be worth a look, it was great! Drove through the Needles which is a really pretty drive through interesting rock formations and a couple fun tunnels. Then did the Wildlife Loop and saw a really surprising... More

We traveled through custer state park and it was a awesome adventure. The scenery was gorgeous. Not have a route planned we went in blindly and wow!!!! I could not believe the wildlife. The buffalos and their babies. The herds were right there, so close to us . You pull over or you have to stop because they are right... More

Love love love this park. The Needles drive was scary yet fun. Couldn't wait to see what was around the next curve. The Wildlife loop was exciting as the buffalo just ignored the cars and continued to graze. Mid April was the perfect time to visit, not much traffic and driving at the reduced speed was not a concern.

This place is a must see, Make sure to make a whole day of it. Travel the needles highway, Go up the iron mountain Road. Norbeck scenic Byway. The wildlife loop is fantastic with the antelope, bison, praire dogs. Just take the time to pull off at every point that they have space. Walk about. Stand at the top and... More

I entered the park the first day late and it was dark before I found where I was going to camp. I was getting in practice of night driving around curves, hills, while dodging deer that were wanting to cross the road. My vision was limited and around one curve I just saw a large shadow and when the light... More

There are two great reasons to visit here. 1. The beautiful landscape. 2. The wild buffalo. Its nice because if you are not a hiker you can drive around and stop at outlook areas. If you are a hiker, there are small (very moderate) trails that take you off the road a bit. There is an abundance of wildlife everywhere... More

Amazing wildlife - a lot of bison & they will cross right in front of your car. Make sure you take the dirt roads off the Wildlife Loop to see the most animals. Stop at the visitor's center before you start your drive and talk to the Park Ranger - he will give you great information.

This was a much better visit than I anticipated- I had no idea I would see the variety of plains, rock formations, trails and animals. It was a great experience to drive the Wildlife Loop and see the bison, deer - and wild donkeys that come right up to your car to talk to you! Needles Hwy is a unique... More
