I have visited over 150 National Parks but the most amazing event I have attended was at Custer State Park. I stumbled into the annual Bison round up around the first of October. You can find the dates on the park's website. It was life changing to watch hundreds of bison run down the hill and back up to where... More

Definitely spend a day driving through Custer State Park. The wildlife loop was filled with bison, prairie dogs, and burros. The Needles Highway is a must-drive route through the rock formations and tunnels. Just be careful if you're driving it around the time of the Sturgis rally, because there will be motorcycles speeding by at every corner.

The park is full of wildlife! We saw more buffaloes than in Yellowstone NP. We took the gravel road to Fisherman's Flats, and there were hundreds of bison there! The Needles highway was spectacular with rock formations and the Sylvan Lake trail was beautiful, especially in the afternoon. Wish we could stay longer.

On a recent road trip to the high plains, we were on our way to Cheyenne after having spent five days in Rapid City. There is so much to see and do in this are but we felt we owed it to ourselves to stop in at this park and spend but a few hours. It was a dreary day... More

We took a delightful ride through the park and then went on to the adjacent National Park. Plenty of wildlife to see close up. Much different terrain than the prairie in nearby areas, so be sure to check it out. You won't be disappointed

Drove iron mountain road today and attempted to drive needles highway but partway through had to turn around where they closed the road. Really nice driving it without the traffic we have heard is there in the summer. Driving from Custer is just beautiful. Coming around a corner and seeing Mount Rushmore straight ahead was magnificent. Very nice drive.

My wife and I took a trip through this park and we will never forget it. There was so much wildlife to see and experience. If you have never seen buffalo up close then this is your park. At one point we had to stop our car and let a herd of about 200 buffalo cross the road in front... More

As many other reviews have noted, Custer SP is very much like a national park. Not quite a Yellowstone or Yosemite, but the animals seen throughout (especially on the Wildlife Loop), the Needles, Sylvan Lake, etc. make this a MUST SEE destination. We visited in July and saw at least 50 bison along the wildlife loop. We also saw a... More

This was my fourth visit to Custer State Park. Amazing! A best kept secret in South Dakota. Absolutely beautiful place to take your family, travel alone or with that special someone. Some visits I have seen eagles, some visits I gave seen no wildlife at all. This trip we saw lots of bison, donkeys, prairie dogs and wild turkeys. They... More
