Definitely worth a visit. A somber, but peaceful and beautiful place. I wished I had brought beads to lay down, as many others had. You can get here on the streetcar that runs down Canal St called Cemeteries.

Memorial park inside the cemetery district in New Orleans. 1100 people died during the hurricane Katrina in August 2005. In this park, you can see the unmarked tombs of the hundreds of victimes who's body were never identified.
The best way to get to the memorial is to take the Canal Streetcar Tram to the end of the line - Cemetery station. The park can be a little bit tricky to find - the name is written on the fence but the gate has "Charity Hospital Cemetery" written on top.
After visiting the memorial, you can also drive to the 17th street canal near Lake Pontchartrain and see where the floodwall collapsed. I also recommend to drive to St. Bernard area (intersection of St. Denis and Cadillac Streets) to see the devastated areas, the abandoned houses, the damaged streets...

Recommend visiting the site with a tour to hear the history of not only Hurricane Katrina but the aftermath and the story behind the memorial. The amazing culture of this city was built and maintained by the people of New Orleans. It is pertinent to pay respect to those who lost their lives in this horrible event.

We just happened upon the memorial while touring other cemeteries in the area. It was a humbling experience to see the memorial and all the blank plates of the unknown victims. A must visit!

This is so sobering! The Katrina Memorial is built on what they call Cemetery Row in New Orleans, Louisiana to honor the victims and evacuees from Katrina. The names of each victim from Katrina is etched on the wall and filled with gold leaf. We cannot afford to forget those loved ones that were lost in this disaster. The front of the memorial will has three steps leading to a pool with a mosaic depicting the waves of a hurricane. Each wall section has different photographs of scenes from the disaster in mosaic. Outside the fence there are nine steps leading down to the Memorial Walk Park. This section of the park has benches to sit and reflect on the names in the stone. The site is very easily attainable by public transportation.

Tastefully done !
This is a very moving experience..calm, quiet ,informative, respectful, spell-binding.
It allows you to see the inner horror this storm left upon the area.I have deep respect for this city to survive & rebuild. This memorial will give you an inside vision to some of the devastation the people endured.

Took the Canal St tram down to cemeteries stop (last stop) - the cemeteries here are free and much more beautiful than the St Louis 1 which I paid $20 USD to get in
The memorial is tucked in to the left of the main cemeteries if you are facing them. It s free ! I think they close at 4pm .
The Katrina Memorial was hauntingly beautiful. Being next to the main road you would expect heaps of noise but it was almost like the cemetery had walls built around it to stop the sound.
Highly recommend!

May we never forget those who lost their lives, and those who never found their way back to their families. Wonderful, solemn place to visit. Be aware this is a respectful place of rest for so many.

Near cemeteries. This is a simple memorial and not an explanation of what happened. Go to the museum or the open air levee explanation for the details.

Our nighttime cemetery tour brought us to the Katrina Memorial and told us the story behind it. It is beautiful and touching. Please make sure to stop here and take in the beauty and love behind the memorial.

Our daughter was a paramedic in Camer Parish and died after this in March and her name was turned to be on the memorial. How can we find out for sure

I hope I am connecting with staff from the Katrina Memorial as I would love background to share with my group. I am with a group of Presbyterians from North Central KS who will be making our 11th trip to New Orleans this year to help with rebuilding - some from our group came twice one year. Originally connected with the Presbytery of LA (you may have seen us in our blue shirts) we are now working under Project Homecoming, an organization still rooted in the Presbyterian Church. That being said, I can't believe we have not visited this memorial! I am responsible for our free night's activity and we have had some wonderful tours and experiences in New Orleans. Our plan is to visit the WWII museum this trip but, now that I am aware of your memorial, we will be there! Does the memorial have hours and is there an admission? How long would you estimate we need to view the exhibit...we do like to absorb ourselves. We love your city and have met and worked with some wonderful people, young volunteers who have now made New Orleans their home, families we have worked with to help them return to their homes and most recently new home construction for low income families. We always feel we gain more than we give. Your memorial will be a highlight for us. Thank you. Luann Miller, Concordia KS

We did not get to see this memorial as it was inside a cemetery (showing "closed"/after hours) with little to no parking around it. It is supposed to be a spiral/hurricane statue/memorial, but not a museum exhibit like we were thinking. Surprised to not find a Hurricane Katrina museum in the whole city!
