Enjoyed my visit again in Treme. Brought my overseas guests here via Basin St Station, Congo Square, The Municipal Auditorium, Armstrong Park, Mahalia Jackson Theatre and the Backstreet Cultural Museum. The Tomb of the Unknown Slave impressed them.

St Augustine Church established 1841 is the oldest Black Catholic Church in America. It was created by and for people of color. Those who were free bought pews for those enslaved and on its grounds is the Tomb of the Unknown Slave. The service appeared...More

The music, the homily, and the overall experience of this church was amazing. One really felt uplifted after the Mass, and we will plan future trips to New Orleans to ensure we are there on a Sunday morning for the 10:00 a.m. Mass

Truly a Catholic Church w an important history! Gospel choir gave me goose bumps and sense of community including warm welcome to visitors was so memorable. Wish I could import these qualities to my parish!

Treat yourself and go to St Augustine to learn about this extremely important church. And, if you are in town on a Sunday by all means go to their jazz mass. Wow - an experience you will always remember. Gorgeous and so moving.

I went to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Slave located right outside the Church. It is a very sobering memorial and worth a visit.

Yes the music is great. But there is more going on here. And if you want to start to "git it on your soul", got out of the French Quarter and show up at St. Augustine Church on Sunday morning. This was truly a significant...More

I bumped into this church just walking the streets one day. I noticed a cross made of anchor chain. As I looked closer, it was adorned with shackles to represent the chains worn by slaves travelling across the seas. The area by the cross is...More

We had stopped by this church and heard it, and the surrounding neighborhood's history which was interesting to say the least. The service is 2 hours, and comes highly recommended with the service the first hour and choir for the 2nd.

That sound? That flavor? That certain je ne sais quoi
that lets you known you’re in “Nawlins” and nowhere
else? It’s all good and in broad abundance on the
streets of Tremé, where so much of what’s considered
to be the very best of New Orleans culture and
tradition is, put simply, just how people go about
their daily lives in this historic part of town. As
one of America’s oldest African-American neighborhoods
