That sound? That flavor? That certain je ne sais quoi that lets you known you’re in “Nawlins” and nowhere else? It’s all good and in broad abundance on the streets of Tremé, where so much of what’s considered to be the very best of New Orleans culture and tradition is, put simply, just how people go about their daily lives in this historic part of town. As one of America’s oldest African-American neighborhoods and among the nation’s first established residential areas for free people of color, Tremé’s significant heritage and contribution cannot be understated. This is especially the case when considering some of Tremé’s most famous residents, most notably jazz great Louis Armstrong. For full flavored food, funky and jazzed up music, and vibrant street life presented with homegrown pride, you can’t beat a visit to Tremé.

We went on a Sunday night (June 16th) hoping to see Kermit (my brother is a big fan) and we were not disappointed. We got there early to ensure we would get a table (it wasn't necessary to get there before 5 - 5:30 to get a table but this was during the off-peak season.) We had a great time. The wings and fried shrimp were awesome and the staff was very friendly. Kermit is such a character, so easy going, so cool. The music was great and honestly it's not even my favorite genre of music. We were a little concerned about the area so we made sure we had United Cab Company's phone number with us. They were there within a few minutes after we called. Next time we are in NOLA we will definitely hit this spot again.

Kermit Ruffins, the famous trumpeter has closed this place but it was excellent. The good news is that he opened a new one a few blocks from this one, also in Tremé. Look for the "Mother in Law Lounge" to reach it.

Being a fan of Kermit Rufkins led me to his Speakeasy in Treme while I recently attended the New Orleans Jazz Fest. Kermit and the BBQ Swingers were in top form for the locals, fans and tourists that packed the place. The other performers after Kermit's session were equally entertaining. The door man was courteous and informative. The locals were inviting and appreciative to have us there. There was a menu and tables to eat at, but once the music started, there was no room for servers to bring out food. This being said, no one was complaining! The door charge was $20.00 and this gave us a full night of fun, music and dancing! I even got a kiss from Kermit! It was indeed the highlight of my ten day trip to New Orleans.

We walked over to Kermit's Speakeasy from our hotel, Inn on St. Peter, in the French Quarter in about 10 minutes. It's just beside Louis Armstrong Park (a lovely place), and we felt perfectly safe. We had a 2 year old baby with us, which was no problem for anyone there. They made us feel welcome and found us seats at the backroom table. The food, gumbo and fried catfish, was very good and probably the best down home food we found in NOLA. I only wish I'd come back for the hot tamales which looked fabulous. Kermit was great, as were the guest singers, one of whom we later saw at the French Quarter Festival. We had a fantastic time, and were so glad we went. Kermit finished on Down in the Treme which had everyone dancing at the end, and we loved the stamp on our wrists that said "Soul". Incidentally, we later saw that one of the official posters of the 2013 French Quarter Festival features Kermit Ruffins front and centre. Go, you'll have a great time.

Kermit is definitely in the coolest guy in the universe club, and his place in the Treme has a lot to do with that. We got there early on a Sunday. Hung out with the man himself and with Kermit's family. Watched the parade roll by out front, dined on a proper barbecue out back, meeting people and soaking up the vibe while Kermit played host. Several hours later when he took the stage we were in fine form to hear his horn. Small place with a lot of love and a lot of history. Bring your mother in law!

My boyfriend and I just got back from our first trip to NOLA and Kermit was a must see for us. This intimate little speakeasy is the perfect place for comfort food and good music. We had dinner while we waited for Kermit to show up (he was coming back from San Francisco and coming straight to the bar to play). They were out of a few of the specials like the rabbit stew and tamales but the red beans & rice, frog legs and chicken wings were all delicious and hit the spot on the chilly rainy night. After the show Kermit walked around and thanked people for being there and he was very friendly when we asked for a picture. This was a GREAT ending to our vacation.

I can't speak highly enough about this establishment. We walked in from the quarter (which many will tell you is a bad idea); we found the walk to be quick and easy and not at all intimidating. The food was stellar and we had a great time interacting with the staff and other patrons before the music started up. Kermit was amazing to see in such a small, local venue! We even got to shake his hand on the way out - it made our trip! A big thanks from Colorado, Kermit!

Visiting from San Francisco, we were looking forward to hearing Kermit at his Speakeasy. The show was billed as Kermit and his band. We showed up over an hour early to get seats. A drummer, electric piano player and bass guitarist came on, the latter two being quite good. However, the drummer was obnoxiously loud, drowning out the other two instrumentalists and the various, not-exceptional singers who came and went from the stage. After enduring about two hours of this, the show seemed to be wrapping up, WITHOUT Kermit ever appearing! Talked to one of the women working there (his daughter, I believe - who was a very good singer) and she said he wasn't coming in tonight because he didn't feel well. Did anyone tell us this when we showed up and paid the cover charge?? So far in NOLA, the best, most professional music we've heard was Delfeayo Marsalis and his group at Snug Harbor. Also, some exceptional street musicians surpassed tonight's performance at Kermit's by miles. So be sure to ask if Kermit is playing that night before you pay the cover charge. If he's not, consider turning around and walking out.

This is New Orleans, circa 2013. Sunday night at Kermit's Treme Speakeasy with Mr. Ruffin at the mic. This was my most memorable musical experience in New Orleans next to a 7th Ward 2nd Line parade. And you just feel the cultural richness of Treme by being there. This is an essential experience for anyone traveling to the Crescent City for music.

We visited Kermit's in December. We had such a good time. We visited because we are fans of his since his appearance in Treme. He is a really nice guy, down to earth and his music is fantastic. His place is very quaint and people are really nice. The food was amazing. He really is an amazing cook. We weren't expecting it to be as good as it was since we think of him as a musician. The fish, red beans and rice were out of this world, so was the mac & cheese. If you are looking for a down home good time, music, a little dancing, drinks and amazing food...This is the place.
