About
Prepare yourself for a great afternoon! New Orleans is known worldwide for our friendly people, rich history, fascinating architecture - and GOOD FOOD! You will experience all of the above on our three hour walking tour of the French Quarter. To begin the tour, you will be greeted by one of our good looking and brainy tour guides, who can answer any questions you may have. Then you are off to a variety of iconic restaurants, all housed in historic buildings that are more than 200 years old. Dishes you will taste include perfectly spiced Jambalaya, and the famous local dish Red Beans and Rice, - did you know that Red Beans and Rice was Louis Armstrong's favorite dish? We continue on and taste the mouthwatering Muffaletta - ham, salami, prosciutto, cheeses and chopped olives - yum! Next is a bowl of a New Orleans favorite - Gumbo! To work that off, let's take a stroll over to the Mississippi River and admire the Old Man. Lastly: DESSERT! a delicious pecan praline.

Three couples did the Culinary History and Tasting tour. Mary was our guide, and she was a hoot. Not only did she know the history of some of the most famous New Orleans restaurants, she also knew the local hot spots, got us into the kitchens, had us in stitches most of the time and made sure my allergies were not an issue, and I was able to eat at each of the six restaurants we visited. Our stops included Antoine's where we enjoyed seafood gumbo enjoyed a wonderful tour of the dining rooms, a peek at their wine cellar and the kitchen, Arnauds's where we sampled Shrimp Arnaud and a delightful mustard sauce learned about ghosts and personal tables.... Then it was on to Tujague's for an unusual boiled brisket. Next came La Davina Cafe y Gelateria for a terrific muffuletta with breads and meats that were out of this world and a sampling of two different kinds of gelato. Our next stop was Creole Delicacies where we watched a quick demo of roux being made and sampled some rice and beans. Finally we visited the Court of Two Sisters where we enjoyed a drink which we paid for on our own.
This tour takes at least three hours. If you want it to take longer, it can. It depends on your group and your guide. Our tour started at 2:00 and took every bit of three hours. We took our time because we were enjoying the food, the information, and Mary our guide. She let us set the pace. She didn't rush us, but she also didn't hold us up in any way. If we wanted to have a drink at any of the restaurants we were welcome to do so, but those were not included in the price.
Tips that we can give on this tour are that you definitely don't want to eat lunch and then show up for this tour. You do a lot of eating. They may not be giving out large portions, but you are eating at five or six places so you'll either want to eat a good breakfast and skip lunch or eat a really really early lunch. We skipped lunch and still were not hungry for dinner until very late and then only half our group ate dinner, so plan accordingly.
You do a lot of walking, wear shoes that allow for this. You are in and out of restaurants, some with air-conditioning, some without- wear layers. This tour is definitely worth the price. Between the information, the food, and the laughs it is a great tour.

Loved this tour! Combined an interesting tour of the French Quarter with samples of great New Orleans food from some great restaurants! The tour was from 2 - 5pm, when the restaurants aren't busy, so we got to go inside and take a look and sample some great food! Rene was our guide and she knows her stuff! We had Creole Seafood Gumbo at Antoine's, Shrimp Remoulade at Arnaud's, Turtle soup at the Desire Oyster Bar, Beef Brisket at Tujague's, along with Muffaletta, Gelato, Red Beans & Rice, and Pralines at other stops. Ran into a Second Line along the way. Very informative and a great late lunch! Wear some good walking shoes, but you do get to stop and sit down frequently along the way. Came away with lots of places to return to and felt we had a better appreciation for the history of the French Quarter! Highly recommend this tour!

I was surprised to see no review of the French Quarter Culinary History and Tasting Tour in Trip Advisor when I was searching for a food tour of New Orleans. This was an outstanding way to spend the afternoon sampling such Louisiana specialties as turtle soup, seafood gumbo, red beans and rice, pralines, muffulettas, and shrimp remoulade. Not only was the food both abundant and excellent, but the guide includes tours of some of New Orleans's most famous restaurants. Our afternoon included stops at Desire at the Royal Sonesta, Antoines, Arnouds, and Tujaques to name a few.

Do book ahead online - http://www.noculinarytours.com/ - as the tours fill up quickly. We had to take our second choice of days but were glad this happened because our guide Sally was fabulous!

Current price of $46 per person sounds a bit expensive, but the eight of us thought we got more than our money's worth.

I review everything I do honest in my opinion and love to leave good reviews but sometimes I just cant find the good. Me and my wife have taken 1 other culinary tour and we absolutely loved it. We were hoping for the same experience but this was not it.
First- we sampled 6 different foods in very small portions. Literally 2 or 3 bites of anything served. The soup was served in a cup the size you get a condiment in.
Second- we went in several places where our guide talked about the great food they had but we never got to sample. We walked in the restaurant, walked around and left. We were in one restaurant for a half hour waiting to be able to see the dining room and look at 3 pictures on a wall and left. Our guide spoke too quietly, especially when we stopped on the street next to a bunch of trash cans to tell us a little more history. Yes the smells on New Orleans streets will turn your stomach in places so bad place to stop. Also after an hour and a half and only having 2 samples we were losing interest and more thinking of what we should actually eat.
Third- History is great but the point of a culinary tour is about food and not a secret room to show us dresses and ball gowns that the original owner wore to mardi gras. There are a few dozen different tours for that information.

My wife and I are very dissapointed for many reasons but, on our previous culinary tour, when we went into a restaurant we were greeted by the staff and seated and served. The chef would come out and introduce himself and tell us about the dishes. Every sample we had on this tour we were handed a small cup or plate and seated in a back room or out of the way. There was only one place that someone who worked there actually came out and introduced himself and told us a little about the food.
The samples we tried were good and the guide did have some good information at times but the tour is unorganized and strays too far from what anyone should expect at a culinary tour. We ate from styrofoam bowls, paper plates and napkins. For almost $50 a person you would expect the tour operator would work better with each restaurant so we did not feel like we were bothering the establishment.
I know I have missed a few points as I was writing this review in my head during the tour which is never a good sign. Their facebook page is also misleading as it says, New Orleans Culinary history tour. The flyer they give out at the end of the tour states culinary history and tasting tour. Yes there is a difference.

My husband and I along with two other couples booked this tour and enjoyed it totally. We initially thought that the guys would only enjoy the food. However, they soon became captivated by the history of the food that the very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide Candy shared with us. The guys are proud to tell everyone that they now know the difference between Cajun and Creole food. The tour gave us exactly what the description promised and more. The portions of the food were perfect tasting sizes and there was plenty to sample. The time passed so quickly but that tends to happen when you're having fun. It didn't seem like we had been walking that long because we had fun every step of the way.
My group and I attended the same tour that America T attended. I was a bit disappointed when I reviewed her feedback. Candy was very professional and comical throughout the tour. There were many different races and nationalities represented in the tour group and she treated everyone with the same respect. My friends and I are African American so we would have certainly noticed if she didn't. I would not recommend that you not take this tour if you are only interested in eating food. This tour is packed full of very interesting historical facts. I mean I never thought that we would get to see the 100 year old dresses of past Mardi Gras queens. So if you plan on showing up screaming, " I'm starving, when do we eat?" or being disrespectful by spitting the food back into the bowl and saying, " This is awful. I can' eat this!" , I suggest that you not attend this tour. I also don't suggest leaving a review when you missed most of the tour because you were talking, texting, taking pictures and uploading them to a social network. If you truly want to learn about the culinary history of New Orleans and enjoy all the tastes that it has to offer, you will have a ball! If you aren't mature enough to enjoy it and you only come because you are starving, I recommend Deanies Seafood Reataurant.

We did the combined cooking class (demonstration) and walking food tour in the quarter. The class had a LOT of good history and the food was AMAZING. Everyone was really friendly. The walking food tour was good too. There was a little bit of overlapping information from the class but not much. I liked getting the perspective from the different restaurants.

Liz, our guide, was wonderful and knowledgeable about New Orleans’ social and the culinary history. We ate at Tujague’s, Leah’s, Broussard, Desire and completed our 3 hour tour at Arnaud’s. Items that stood out were the poboy beef brisket at Tujague’s, crispy batter fried alligator and grilled oyster at Desire, turtle soup, shrimp remoulade and a cheese-ham French puff pastry at Broussard to die for! At Leah it’s pralines and more pralines....a great experience and highly recommended.

We imagined this having small but delicious portions of unique Creole food and learning the New Orleans food traditions. There was some education but some misinformation as well. For example, we were told Mardi Gras, the King's cake with the baby hidden "were to celebrate the changing of seasons". Isn't a cultural event based on Catholic beliefs?

The first item at the starting place was similar to a small tri tip sandwich with horse radish dressing. Some history was given but again nothing to wow you. The 2nd stop was a store that sold spices, candy etc. We had the opportunity to smell different spices and then sample a dip with of all things POTATO CHIPS. Then we had the opportunity to buy from the store. We went to a candy store and were given a praline and the history and had another opportunity to buy from a store. You get the picture.

The only place that had any of what I thought the tour would be was Antoine's. We saw their various dining rooms and heard the history which was interesting. We sampled their gumbo which was delicious.

We ended our tour at some unremarkable restaurant that gave us a sample of turtle soup.

I think the tour was overpriced and is somewhat a marketing tool for at least the 2 stores we visited.

Here's my suggestion: For the money we spent, we could have had a nice dinner at Antoine's and experienced some good food, that might be an option to be considered. Sorry Viator, I've booked other great tours with you, but this tour did not meet my expectations given the cost.

Good and interesting info, but....
- Too crowded (17 people) I felt like we were in the way at every establishment we visited. It was awkward.
- Tiny samples of food served on disposable plates like grocery store samples. I was
not full at the end.
- Took up the whole afternoon.
