Friends of the Cabildo Tours are at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m from the 1850 House Museum Store on Historic Jackson Square (523 St. Ann Street). Friends of the Cabildo is a private non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation founded in New Orleans in 1956. The FOC is a support organization for the Louisiana State Museum's and its departments of collections, education, and exhibit. Friends of the Cabildo also operates the 1850 House Museum Store for the Museum, serving as its official Louisiana State Museum Store. The Friends also provide walking tour guide training classes for licensed tour guides. The month long intense class is one of two classes in the City of New Orleans and its guides are some of the best in the city. Guides volunteer their time to give two tours a day Tuesday-Sunday from the 1850 House Museum Store (523 St. Ann Street) and each guide provides a historical, cultural and architectural view of the city that they learned in the class, but also creates a story of New Orleans that he or she has experienced. Tours leave from the 1850 House Museum Store on Historic Jackson Square at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. everyday but Monday. Note: The tail of Andrew Jackson's Horse in Jackson Square points straight at the store!

Wonderful walking tour of the Irish Channel area of New Orleans. The tour was led by Colleen who grew up in the area. We learned about the contributions of the Irish to NOLA culture, some architectural history and individual characters that made the area unique. One of the nice features of all Friends of the Cabildo tours is they are... More

David F., a local volunteer, led our group over the French Quarter with very clever and illuminating tales of its history. I went to New Orleans for the food, music, and art but found myself having my best time there learning all about the French Quarter and why it is the way it is.

We loved supporting the nonprofit Friends of the Cabildo with our tour funds. Our guide, Ben, gave us a three-hour tour because we had so many questions. He was patient and maintained the quality of information throughout the tour. It was a good overview tour of the French Quarter and provided us the important historical background to deepen our understanding... More

Irwin and Sandy are a well rehearsed team that gave us 2 hours of the characters and countries, battles, buyouts and agreements that influenced and led to the New Orleans of today. A great primer to start your exploration of the rest of the city.

After reading a review of the Friends of the Cabildo Walking Tour in a guide book we decided to give it a try. It turned out to be a fantastic way to start our vacation. Don Craig, our Tour Guide, was so knowledgeable about the area. He was full of great historical information but also gave us recommendations on things... More

We were fortunate to tour the French Quarter guided by Don Nolan, a life-long New Orleans native, history buff, and volunteer for Friends of the Cabildo, among other local community historical organisations who preserve local history, such as "Save Our Cemeteries" and the World War II museum. He was friendly and extremely knowledgeable, distinguishing between historical fact, myths and urban... More

Visiting New Orleans with friends. First time back in a number of years. My husband and I had enjoyed a walking tour with the Cabildo years ago and so decided we would do this again. The tour was excellent and Josh V was a fascinating tour guide who shared his interests and knowledge of his adopted city with enthusiasm. He... More

We went initially to tour the 1850 house and found that it was closed on Monday's, but we got free admission for the following day to the museum with the purchase of a French Quarter walking tour. David was entertaining and knowledgeable! The information not only about history, but also of culture and architecture made this tour very memorable. Thank... More

We were fortunate enough to meet Don Nolan from Friends of the Cabildo during a tour of Lafayette Cemetery in the Garden District the day before who also volunteers for Save our Cemeteries (Both organizations use volunteers and help restore the history of the area with your tour funds) Don who is a New Orleans native was thorough and prided... Staying in French Quarter

Neighbourhood Profile
French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.
