Cafe Lafitte's is the oldest gay bar in the United States. They have a upstairs "Balcony Bar" that is open on the weekends and great for entertaining. Also the Balcony Bar is great for private parties.

Friendly service, drinks were a little expensive but the balcony view is worth it. Like most of the gay bars I've seen in the French Quarter they are catering primarily to the guys, but that's not too surprising. Good atmosphere, and lower key than some of the other places along Bourbon. Would go there again, for sure.

It was a decent atmosphere, but seemed a little different than some of the other local bars. Comfortable, older crowd, prices were standard for the street.

I live a few blocks away. When I was trying to become acquainted with the scene, I found Lafittes. I would sit in the back dark corner by myself and sip my drink. Bob made it an effort to come chat with me everytime I came in.This certainly made me come back with the hospitality and awesome drinks! John is... More

I love Cafe Lafitte for a lot of reasons. The bartenders are some of the friendliest in any bar in the city; I have had more interesting conversations with perfect strangers in this bar than any other gay bar in the city; I love the combination of music and videos that they play; The Napkin Toss rocks, and the Balcony... My husband and I were headed to brunch, and we decided to stop in Café Lafitte for a bloody Mary on our first day of vacation in NOLA. The music loop was funky, the clientele eclectic, the bartender charming, and the bloody Mary was just what the doctor ordered. I didn't realize it was a gay bar until it came... More

We stopped in during the afternoon. We got there in time for strong, happy hour priced drinks. After a couple of days in New Orleans, reasonably priced drinks were almost a shock to our system. The bartender was really friendly. Since we were there during the day, we can't attest to their evening activities, but the quiet was a very... More

Nice option for people who like to party with good music in a bar setting. The sound system is great, the choice of music gay classic, the bartenders are very friendly without being over the top and the prices are very reasonable. I loved it ... a lot.

I have a lot of bars that I would call my home bar away from home and this is mine in New Orleans. Sundays I go for the Famous Napkin Toss! It always puts a smile on my face. They call it Trash Disco at it starts at 4:00pm on Sunday. At some point in the evening, you'll see that... More

Staying in French Quarter

Neighbourhood Profile
French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.
