Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, located in the U.S. Custom House...

Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, located in the U.S. Custom House on Canal Street, encourages you to use all five senses as you explore North America’s largest museum devoted to insects and their relatives. You’ll discover why insects are the building blocks of all life on our planet and along the way, you’ll be shrunk to bug size; wander through a mysterious Louisiana swamp; join the active audience of an awards show for bugs, by bugs; and be captivated by thousands of butterflies in an Asian garden. Voted A top museum for you and your kids by CNN, 2009.

I have never been to an insectarium before and had no idea what to expect. We spent about 2 hours face to face with every type of insect imaginable. It was fascinating. The butterfly room had 100's of butterflies flying freely from flower to flower. The volunteers were very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you may have. Great... More

We may be a little biased in that I have been in the pest industry and my son is an entomologist but this was a lot of fun. Bugs are interesting to all even though some are grossed out a little. Many different insects and butterflies to see and a place to try some of them as food. Keep up... More

This is an awesome place to visit! My husband and I had so much fun! It was very informative and lots of really neat things to see and do. Don't miss the Tiny Termite Cafe and try the bug dishes they have available for samples! Very cool experience! I can't stress how much fun this whole visit is! Don't miss!

This was MUCH more interesting and fun than we imagined. My husband and I spent well over 2 hours learning, looking and experiencing the lives of all kinds of insects. The Butterfly Garden is awesome - take your time, look carefully because butterflies of ALL variety are everywhere. Beautiful plants too! Can't wait to take my Granddaughters!

With 4 kids ranging from 2-13 in age, I've been to every museum one can imagine. But I've never been to a place quite like this. I never knew I could be so fascinated by creepy crawlies. Although the museum is small, there are still plenty of excellent exhibits to hold your fascination for hours! I highly recommend this museum... More

When we visited there were many school field trips coming and going, all day. The verious rooms are set up with the kids and mind, but there is lots of information for adults.

We came here for a wedding and turned it into a family reunion. Visited with four kids (3 to 11 years old) and six adults, one in a wheelchair. Although the place was very busy (you do have to pass through metal detectors for entry) they are very fast and the trip through the place runs smooth. The kids had... More

We enjoyed this museum. The best part is at the end where you will see all types of butterflies. If you have children, this museum is very "hands on". Takes about 2 hours to go all the way through. We enjoyed it. It is a bit expensive, but we liked it.

Heads up-The Insectarium is located in a federal building, so you will have to pass through a metal detector before you enter. My 9 year old really loved looking at all the insects! He was dashing from one exhibit to the next. We went here on a field trip, and will definitely be back to take our time to see... More

Take your kids here. They will get a freaky fascination with all the creepy crawlies in this place. The price is a little high for what you get, but otherwise is a great way to spend an hour or so in the hot afternoon.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Compared to the more evocative monikers of some other parts of New Orleans, the downtown’s humdrum title might suggest that this area is all about business and little else. But don’t let the bland name keep you away from the Central Business District. The CBD offers a wide range of fun things to do that would be touted as exceptional in less jubilant corners of the world. Bordered by the French Quarter, the Arts District and Tremé, with the river at its eastern extreme, this hub for sports, gaming, shopping, theatre, family-friendly activities, and amazing regional cuisine makes a smart base wherever your interests lie.
