Neighbourhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

Maison Bourbon is preserving REAL jazz every night with great bands. Real trumpets, saxes, clarinets, upright bass, real piano. Louis Armstrong would be proud! They have great prices on drinks and food, and no cover charge. You can't beat this place, especially if you compare it to the place around the corner with "preservation" in its name. Keep up the good work entertaining the people, Maison Bourbon! I'll be visiting every time I vist NOLA.

Want some live New Orleans jazz music? This a must come and see! My husband loves music, which is mainly why we came to New Orleans. But, I'm not a big loud, in your face, club person. So, this place met both of our needs. The venue is not large, but the music is. We actually sat slightly behind the band, facing the crowd that had gathered (very eclectic group of ages and looks, but all appreciative of the music), but that didn't keep us from enjoying the musicians and their artistry. They mostly played traditional jazz top 40, but every once in a while diverted off to do a cover of something with a jazz flair. It was a great way to kick off our NOLA experience!

Walking down the main part of Bourbon Street, from the Iberville Street end, it's less like NCIS New Orleans and more like the Malia Strip, complete with raucous fishbowl and hand grenade drinkers (or as the sign outside a bar in the adjoining Toulouse Street put it: "Tourist Trap Death Alley").
But if you make it about halfway down Bourbon Street though, keep an eye out for the Maison Bourbon, an oasis of largely Trad Jazz in a near desert of Drum and Bass. The sign outside makes its mission clear, when it says it's "Dedicated to the preservation of Jazz".
They've got a decent selection of beer and spirits, reasonably priced for the US (when we visited it was $8 for a pint of Blue Moon) and there was live Jazz every night; which you could watch from a conference-style seated area or from your seat at the bar. Talking of which, the bar staff were great, and the polite request that you ordered a minimum of one drink, was more than easy to comply with.
It was our first trip to New Orleans and we found this place on our first walk around. Glad we did.

Fun jazz bar, one drink minimum per set. Seating is limited, try to time it right after a set ends as the tables turn over. You can also catch a show from outside as well.

It's hard to find traditional Dixieland bands on Bourbon St in the French Quarter anymore. This was a good find. There was no cover and a 1 drink minimum. Drinks cost about $10 and we gave the band a $10 tip so for about $30 we got to see some talented musicians playing real New Orleans music. I took one star away because to be true Dixieland you need the horns and this band just had 1 saxophone, but it was an oasis in a sea of pop cover bands.

There are only two venues I will visit when I travel down Bourbon St. This is one of them. You can actually hear yourself think and talk to your neighbor the music is so pleasant not that blasting eardrum breaking music from many of the other clubs. The drinks are very reasonable as well. They have 2 bands that I know of, and both are outstanding you will not be disappointed with either one. The one band has a Japanese lady that is an outstanding dancer with some of the tunes, boy can she move her legs. The bar services are very friendly and efficient. I highly recommend Maison Bourbon when visiting NOLA.

After a confusion over where the bathroom was, the mourner yelled at us in a very abusive way. After buying the drinks, he asked us with a waiter to leave the place without letting us enjoy the drinks and music. This treatment of tourists from a place that promotes local culture is regrettable, resulting in apart from a bad experience, a disappointment in the treatment of the people of the city. It's a shame that local music is affected by such poor treatment of customers. With that deal, they should close the place, unfortunately.

Great band, stiff drinks, a definite must for a truly New Orleans experience. Wheelchair users, this is mostly accessible. No steps to get in, low tables, but the washrooms would be tough to access with a wheelchair. They're located on the main level through the courtyard but have very narrow doors.

I had the best evening at this bar! The drinks are some of the best in the city. The bartender took so much care making our Sazeracs. Such wonderful detail to her craft. Along with the excellent drinks, there was a top shelf jazz band playing. Some immense talent filled the stage. I had a smile the whole time I was at Maison Bourbon. Make it a stop on your visit!

We walked in as the band were playing and we were just smiling because to us that was New Orleans to a tee. I went to the bar and got 2 reasonably priced drinks from the worlds most miserable barman. But it didn’t change the music, Leroy an his band were ace and we really would recommend a stop off here .

Well, let me put it this way... No security at the entrance, open windows, no ID check, no photo allowed.
