Address
Neighbourhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

James is a striking man with spunk, character, humor, dramatic poise. He provided exceptional and historical information, with lots of truth and heart.

With his dramatic story telling skills, he captures the attention well all strive to give. James has tones of knowledge about the city of New Orleans and is very helpful with directions and questions about the city of New Orleans.

This man deserves a raise in his pay because he raised my spirits in the glorious city of New Orleans. 🙌👏👊🤜🤛👊👏🙌

We could not really touch anything. Specially could not take photos. Felt very unwelcoming! Had a bunch of teenagers, they super excited to go in to shop but we quickly since they felt like there were being watched.

The guy that worked in the "book section" was a horrible grouchy person. My friend and I opened a book to see the contents before buying and the guy passively aggressively told us to read one of the multiple inconspicuous signs. It was in the middle of the day and he regarded us as belligerent, drunk tourists. I am pregnant and hadn't been drinking all weekend. We proceeded to get out of there as fast as possible. The guy works at a TOURIST SHOP! He should learn to be nice to the TOURISTS. I recommend NOT going in there.

I think that anyone that walks into a voodoo shop with the attitude that it's JUST voodoo is the wrong way to approach anyone that works there. I wouldn't go Mass and Say it's JUST a man on a cross. You might think it's a tourist attraction but for many it's a way of life and Spiritual Practice.

Sure, some of the store's products are authentic...and some are just for tourist. But the staff is rude, arrogant and not very welcoming. It felt as if they were annoyed that they had customers!
Sure, you don't have to have a "Disney" attitude to cater towards tourists. Some go there because they are curious, they rest of us who practice the craft go there to pick up supplies and see what's new and possibly chat about products.

My new FAV occult shop in the Quarter is Hex: Old World Witchery on Decatur St. The staff is so inviting and enjoys helping and sharing knowledge with its patrons! The store its self is very inspiring!

The shop itself is at least worth a look in - seeing the high rows of dusty viles and artifacts is pretty cool. I spent a good 20 minutes just browsing despite its small size. However, there is not much else positive about this shop and I do not reccomend supporting them with an actual purchase. The things are very pricey (tiny 14 mL oils for 5$ and it only gets worse) and the staff is IMPOLITE. No one greets you, no one offers help, they all just glare at you condescendingly as you browse. For example, when I asked if they had smaller Voodoo dolls for sale the cashier just said "Yes." He didnt even offer to show me or help me find them despite the fact there werent any other customers. I can tell none of the staff were actual practitioners, just arrogant new-age folk. The store is filled with signs like "No pictures or we throw you out!" "Do NOT touch our merchandise, it's rude!" etc... and there was even a sign next to the bath salts threatening to kick you out if you so much as said a drug joke. Seriously??? It seems like they are generally more eager to throw you out for something than keep you in.

I actually cannot believe my experience here tonight, it was my last night here in NOLA and I wanted a souvenir from a Voodoo shop as most would. I suffer from sleep paralysis and when I asked the sales assistant what some of their blue sleep stones or whatever they were called were made from /history etc she was totally rude as !! Gave me a response like “No I do not know, I just sell the stuff!” Which is pretty much what she had said. I work in recruitment and would not hire anybody who was not passionate about a role nor passionate about what they do/sell, this so called sales assistant was far from that! She accused me of attitude/hostility when I questioned her on why she was unable to answer my question, but if you were a customer would you not be set back and question why they would not know? Do they not want to sell you their product? I guess not because when I left I said “you had lost all our business “ (my partner was interested in some of their products) she laughed us out of the shop and said she didn’t care! I could not believe it, she may not care but I am sure the owner of the store would and I suggest they begin recruitment for a new sales assistant or either terminate this women immediately as she is costing them business.

We went into this shop and were browsing. We stopped to look at books, which I most probably would have purchased, but as soon as we opened a book, a very rude woman came and angrily tapped on a sign stating something like "do not read books.. You bend a page, you buy it". I said to my son "how would I know if I wanted it unless I look inside". She yelled at us very sarcastically "you read the back!" we left. They surely lose many sales there. What a shame.. Go to another voodoo store.. We had wonderful experiences at the others. The guy working up front must either be a vampire or think he is by the way.. Quite unique with his long pointy nails, goth makeup, pentagram jewelry and black skirt.. Only in new Orleans!

Rev. Zombie's Voodoo Shop is right across the street from Pat O'Brien's and a couple doors down from Yo Mama's. It has a great location to attract tourists. The shop is divided into two sides with two drastically different personalities. The side which sells t-shirts, cigars, figures had a gal working who was chatty and funny and helpful. The other side, which sells mostly voodoo dolls and amulets, had the most unfriendly, unpleasant employee in New Orleans.

The gal on the friendly side tried to help me locate a specific item and after being unsuccessful, told me I had to try on the other side. The employee there was busy hawking readings to tourists funneling through the main door. I waited until he turned his attention towards me. I asked for the specific item and he took his dirty fingers and tapped a handwritten (one of MANY) sign beside the register which said "we offer only positive voodoo items." He immediately began hawking the reading again to the new arrivals in the shop.

I didn't leave but said that I had seen what I wanted in the window. He seemed annoyed that I didn't just go away. Not taking his eyes off the new arrivals he said "we get asked to sell those items a hundred times a day," and before even completing that sentence, he barked out towards a tourist wielding a camera "NO PHOTOS!!!"

I am surprised with this attitude, they sell anything or that anyone purchases a reading. The sad part is, I would give 4 stars to the tobacco selling side and a -1 star to the opposite side. In the end, I went to Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo on Bourbon Street and purchased exactly what I was looking for - without the hassle of a RUDE employee.

Rev. Zombie's House of Voodoo is located on Bourbon Street and is a great place to 'pick up supplies', take in an important and sometimes overlooked aspect of New Orlean's culture, and collect some neat souvenirs unlike any you will find in the tourist shops. We have also been to the Voodoo Museum (which has a GREAT tour!)--I would recommend stopping in at Rev. Zombie's to anyone...young or old, no matter what your religious background. Just be sure to keep an eye out for the chicken's feet necklaces and be sure not to touch the altars!!!!
