Neighbourhood: Garden District
Head to the Garden District for the full-on New Orleans experience replete with quaintly clanking streetcars, proudly grandiose antebellum mansions, picture perfect avenues lined with live oaks loaded down with Spanish moss, and a wealth of beautiful churches and many more architectural marvels. Even a brief excursion here makes plain why it’s called the Garden District. So, when you visit be sure to give yourself ample time for admiration at a languidly slow pace befitting such gentile strand of riverside living and to allow you to maximize each opportunity to stop and smell the roses – and whichever other blooms you might come across. While taking it all in, you’d do well to dine at one of the city’s most beloved destinations for regional cuisine. Gourmands from far and wide (and right round the corner) swear the age-old Commander’s Palace is the best restaurant in town – and have been doing so since it opened back in 1880.

We took a walking tour of the Garden District, past all the beautiful homes, including those of celebrities, and were thrilled to be able to enter one and take a tour. This historic house was built in 1856 and is open on a limited basis for tours, but our visit was included as part of an escorted walking tour. Only the ground floor was available to see, but it was furnished in the period style and very interesting. Gorgeous stained glass window.

We came upon this mansion on our own after completing a tour of the Garden District. It happened to be open for tours when we were there for $15. Why not?
What struck me as very unusual about this mansion is photography is encouraged and nothing says, "Do Not Touch." In fact, you can sit on the furniture! Amazing. Completely enjoyed the tour.
The outside of this mansion was used in the movie "Django Unchained" and it is directly across the street by the former mansion of Anne Rice & later, Nicolas Cage.

Built in 1859 and willed to the Opera Guild this home is finished in period pieces and was the most amazing home tour we took. They are only open to the public for a small charge on Mondays, otherwise you have to book with Greyline Tours. We went on a Monday per the web site and were able to take our time to look through the house as slow as we wanted. Between the architecture, furnishings, information, and the "take all the pictures you want" policy where most houses do not allow any photography this is a New Orleans must if your into this kind of thing. If your going to tour houses don't miss this one.

Well worth the fifteen dollars, they would prefer cash. Walk up and ring the door bell - someone will answer and give you their mission statement.

Back in 1965 the historic home at 2504 Prytania Sreet - which was built in 1856 - was left to the New Orleans Women's Opera Guild. The Guild has used the home as their headquarters and today offers public tours on Mondays - between 10:00am and 4:00pm - for $15. It's a great opportunity to see inside one of the majestic homes in the Garden District and the house still contains many period furnishings. Reservations aren;t necessary and the women who provide the tours provide great insight into the home and current New Orleans society.

The Davis/Seebold home, built in 1859, is a restored mansion in the garden district on Prytania Street, a block from St Charles and close to Commander's Palace. It is owned by the Women's Opera Guild and is open for tours on Mondays. The tours are done in small groups by docents, members of the guild, who are steeped in the history and lore of the city and the district. Our guide was a pleasure to talk to and to listen to. If you've ever dreamed of living in a house like this, it is available for events. Don your formal wear and pretend its yours.
