My wife and I went to spend the morning at the cafe and the museum. Despite what the signs, the website, Google, and this site say, while the cafe is open at 8am, the mise only has one tiny gallery open at 8am.
You can't claim you are open when 80% of the museum is closed until lunch time. And please don't be condesendimg to me when you finally notice I'm try to find away to the rest of the museum. How about a closed until 11am sign instead of.makng me guess. I understand that you are a teaching institute, but if you want to be open to the public, learn a little something about serving the public. Fix you signage and teach your staff how to talk to the public.

This art museum has a lot of world class pieces. There is a wide array of art from local to national and international artists. They expanded the museum since we last visited many years ago. Not sure how they can do this but admission is free. The only hard part is finding parking.
Maps are not provided so plan ahead and print a map but they also have a QR scan at the desk to get a map.

I was thrilled to see the museum was open on a Monday and also until 7. We arrived at 6, so we were unable to see the entire museum, but really enjoyed what we saw. The perk was we didn’t have to share the galleries with many people. I’d love to return when I have more time.

This was a really great museum. It helps that some of our favorite artists from around the globe were represented here, of course, but it’s still a really great museum. And it’s free so you might as well visit. You can do a flyby if you’re pressed for time, but there’s enough here to spend a couple of hours if you so desire.

First, unless this is an adults trip, know that a bunch of the more modern “art” is not family friendly. It’s not particularly adult friendly—-unfortunately I cannot “unsee” this stuff. No, it doesn’t challenge me or make me reflect on anything. It’s just garbage created by seriously demented people who contribute nothing to societal advancement.
On the bright side. The collection of 15th- 19th century realism is quite good.
Summary: skip this “art museum “…the actual art is scarce.

We love to come to this museum and enjoy the art. The artwork is world class and the museum is free. We chose this week to come because it was Spring Break for UWM and we knew it would be easier to find parking on the compass. The main building is under renovation but there was still plenty to see in the other building. The renovation should be done by the end of this year so we look forward to their reopening.

This museum was fine. It's about the right size - you can take it all in a single visit. It's also free, which is great. There is a scavenger hunt for kids, and although it's not great, it did keep my 10 year old from complete boredom. The collection has a wide range of materials, although it's a lot of modern art, which isn't out favorite, so it didn't appeal to us as much as it might to someone who loves modern art.

All walks of art entertainment. Modern facility with an array of mediums to enjoy. Rotating exhibits, so come often through the year.

The only expense you may have is paying for parking as admission to the collection is free. It's housed in an impressive and modern building on the campus a couple of blocks from the lake. While the range of the collection is broad I can't say I saw any central theme. That said I assume that anyone viewing the collection will find a number, probably quite a number of pieces to admire. The building itself is one of the things I most admired. A great space to view art and one easy to navigate. In addition to the requisite gift shop the building has free lockers for excess items, bathrooms, and seats. It is a nice space in which you can comfortable spend hours viewing a varied art collection.

If you really want to go to an art museum and you cannot drive over to Milwaukee or better Chicago, the Chazen is worth an hour or so. The strength of the painting collection is American and European from 1500. The work is pretty ordinary and seems more like a collection of art left to the university by donors rather than a thought out collection.

Are there places nearby to have lunch?

Absolutely... it's in heart of UW Campus. There are several places across University Ave, or you can walk a couple of blocks over to State St.
