We decided to go on a lagoon safari, we had heard great things about the safari. Overall it was a reasonable experience, and very peaceful however we didn’t see much wildlife other than birds. They said we were unfortunate, so perhaps it wasn’t our day.

Transport to the lagoon was by Tuk Tuk, he was 15 minutes late which when you got up got a 6am collection was slightly frustrating.

The tour was safe and relaxing itself, it was not very expensive so even though we didn’t see crocodiles or elephants as expected it was not a major disappointment.

You ride round the lagoon on a man paddled boat, which is not very comfortable so wear flexible clothing.

A must do in Pottuvil - Arugambay. This amazing boat ride starts from Pottuvil point and goes through pottuvil lagoon upto the kottukal beach which is next to famous whisky point beach.During the journy, we can experience the weired feeling of lagoon breeze which mixed up with heat of eastern cost, Views of the beautiful mangroves, Habits of the wild elephants, crocadiles and number of bird varieties, lives of the fishermen and prawn catchers and etc...This boat safari also proves that the pottuvil and Arugambay areas are not only for surfers but also for nature lovers. rates are also reasonable. Highly recommended to make this activity more and more popopular among the local and foreign travelers who visit arugam bay and potuvil beaches.

In the morning, we booked a slot at 4.30pm for a 2 hour boat ride. The people who man the tiny office and rafts were attentive and polite. They gave us a mat to sit on the raft and clean life jackets.

We saw 3 elephants feeding, an eagle in its nest, a few birds and mangroves.

The boatman Ismail was a pleasant man who couldn't speak much Sinhalese, therefore he couldn't explain much, but that was okay.

It is not a must do excursion, but nice to do if you have 2 hours at your disposal.

This is a great tour, especialy because local people row you around the lagoon. This is really hard work, so please give them a good donation if you do so. Without a motor you can see so much birds and in the afternoon herds of elephants.

This is a must do when in Pottuvil. The lagoon is calm and lined with beautiful mangroves lining either side. We did the tour in the evening and saw the most beautiful sunset. As we cruised along, saw a few crocodiles wading into the water. Ever present peacocks made the colours vibrant. A few monkey families were seen after a day's work.
