About
The Nametoko Gorge is a scenic area that stretches from Uwajima to Matsuno, Kitauwa, both in Ehime Prefecture. Designated as part of the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park, Nametoko offers lush greenery in the summer and beautiful foliage in the fall. The approximately 12-kilometer-long valley is characterized by smooth granite riverbeds formed by erosion. Visitors can experience the grandeur of nature as they watch the waters flow over giant monolithic rocks. Yukiwa Falls, a symbol of Nametoko Gorge, flows over a giant monolithic rock at a width of 20 meters and a length of 80 meters. Yukiwa Falls has also been designated one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. A promenade runs along the valley, making for a convenient way to take a walk through Nametoko's relaxing outdoor scenery.

Beautiful regardless the season though I was hoping for autumn colors but everything was still super green and dense. You can take the local train to Matsumaru station and then you’ll need to take a taxi which cost me about 4180 yen for a 30 minute ride. Another couple on the train over had rented the super light bikes and rode up the hill so you have options if you don’t have a car.

It’s a series of paths on either side of the falls that all culminate at the top so it’s a bit of a choose your own adventure and the time and distance is up to you, 10 minutes to 2 hours.

The curry at the outdoor centre was delicious and well priced. “Name”, their spokescat was friendly and looking for pets. Don’t feed him.

On a side note, there’s a foot bath in front of the Matsumaru station where you can soak your tired feet.

This was a beautiful place to hike into the snowy mountains. The river and waterfalls were breathtaking and the forest was so peaceful. I’ve only gone in winter but I’ve heard it has some great swimming holes on summer.

I joined a Nametoko Fest 2014 and I signed for a guided trekking. The guide doesnt speak English but it is ok. We went trekking and it was awesome. Super clean and I can hear the birds sing! Then we saw the sight for canyoning and it was breathtaking!

There are other activities here as well. There is a hotel and coffee shop nearby.

The location is only accessible by car but if you book a hotel, they can pick you up at the train station.

My friend with a car brought me there and I took a taxi to the nearest train station going home. I paid around 4000yen for that taxi ride.

But the experience trekking and canyoning was awesome!
