Uwajima Castle is a treat for anyone who loves history or architecture, since it is one of the 12 castles that was not destroyed and rebuilt. The huge, wood beams inside the small, three-story structure is fascinating, and it is easy to imagine what life might have been like, since the interior has not been radically converted into a museum.... After a superb lunch at Hozumitei, we took a short & comfortable 500m walk to the base of Uwajima Castle & up the hill we climbed. It was by far the smallest of castles we have visited, but being one of the twelve original castles remaining in Japan, it added some awe. In all, including us there were about 6... More

In Shikoku’s south west, and furthest south I’ve been in Japan so far, is Uwajima Castle, containing one of 12 of the nation’s original castle keeps. The Tenshukaku (donjon) of Uwajimajō dates to 1666. The eves of this darling tower seem to be tempered in their curvature with the interceding centuries, age-laden and bending beneath ceramic tiles. Today Uwajimajō is... More

The Uwajima castle is one of the 12 remaining original Japanese castle - totally worth the visit for any history lover. The castle is small but lovely, with great views of the surrounding city, port and mountains. It is not as visited as the one in Matsuyama so you have it almost for yourself.

The walk up to the castle has the feel of an ancient walkway which has not changed much over time. The steps are uneven and there is no smooth roadway. It may be difficult for those using canes or in need of walking assistance. The castle itself is not all that impressive but it does offer a good view of... More

very nice small castle with exposed weapons, armors, paintings, ceramics & related antiques artifacts of value. the parc around have nice uncommon graveyards with naive sculpting, proof of early ages of buddhism in Japan, and the guide inside the castle is worth listening if you speak a bit of japanese. he's very open to share the history of the castle,... Walked up to the castle around sunset. Gorgeous view. Didn't go inside the castle. Would definitely recommend at least walking around, though cannot comment on paid entry or indoor aspect.

My wife and I spent a few days in Matsuyama and opted to rent a car to drive down to Uwajima and Ozu to explore their castles. Just be sure to get your International Drivers Permit from AAA. We rented a K-Car from Nippon Rent-A-Car, which was just across from Matsuyama Station. Warning....no english spoken here. They'll print out basic... More

This is the third time I've been to this castle; mainly in town for the Uwajima Festival and to see bullfighting, but I've never seen an original castle look so nice from the outside. You'd swear it was a restoration. From the Jcastle website, this castle is rated a 4 out of 5 due to the extensive network of stone... More

We liked our visit to the castle. Nice building, looks like old. The hill is also very nice with beautiful views over the city. A must see
