Visited Uwajima as a side trip from Matsuyama. The castle is an easy 10-minute walk from the station, plus a not too strenuous hike up a wooded hill. The stone retaining walls are overgrown, adding to the historical mystique of the place. The castle keep...More

This is a small castle, compared to some of its brothers/sisters, but original, all wood. Little visited, so you have it all for yourself. After our visit we did walk in the neighbourhood and saw it from different points of view : the water in...More

A short walk from the train station. A nice, huff & puff hike up and easy concrete pathway about halfway. Then you’ll need to walk on dirt/gravel pathways and stone stairs to get to the top. Nice views of the surrounding areas.

Spent a number of years in Ehime and have visited Uwajima Castle 3 times now. It's not the biggest of castles but it's a goodie. Definitely worth the visit, and why not take in Ozu Castle to the North as well.

This castle is fantastic, because it's so small that you can imagine you're house hunting vs looking at an original castle. It's a road less travelled and the park is very nice and quiet. If you are ever in the area you need to check...More

After a superb lunch at Hozumitei, we took a short & comfortable 500m walk to the base of Uwajima Castle & up the hill we climbed. It was by far the smallest of castles we have visited, but being one of the twelve original castles...More

In Shikoku’s south west, and furthest south I’ve been in Japan so far, is Uwajima Castle, containing one of 12 of the nation’s original castle keeps. The Tenshukaku (donjon) of Uwajimajō dates to 1666. The eves of this darling tower seem to be tempered in...More

The walk up to the castle has the feel of an ancient walkway which has not changed much over time. The steps are uneven and there is no smooth roadway. It may be difficult for those using canes or in need of walking assistance. The...More
