MEDEWI – NORTH COAST BALI
Medewi is situated on the west coast of Bali about 2 hours drive of Kuta. It is a small village. Turning off the main road at medewi are a few restaurants and guest houses.
The guesthouses have clean basic fan rooms for about 80 000 to 100 000 rupiah breakfast included. The Medewi Beach Cottages have air conditioned rooms for 500 000 rupiah and upwards. It also has a pool that is available to non-guests for 40 000 rupiah.
There are restaurants at the corner of the turnoff to Medewi, the Medewi Beach Cottages and along the beach to the north.
The beach at Medewi is a long sweep of black sand to the north, it is volcanic rock and boulders and the water is murky. On the rocks are barnacles so foot protection is needed to get in and out of the water. A number of rivers cross the beach at various points.
Towards the south is a reef which ends at the river mouth. After this there is a black sand beach that is suitable for swimming though the water is murky.

After scouring the internet for a few hours; looking for a hotel that offered a comfortable, clean and peaceful environment, I came across Medewi Bay Retreat. As I was intending to travel with my 2 sons (15 & 12) a good restaurant, pool and clean room were my priorities. After travelling to Bali for the past 20 years, we were fed up with Kuta, Seminyak, Legian, Ubud, Lovina, Ahmed, etc. We wanted to get back to the 'old Bali' where you're not hassled every day and the waves aren't fought over by hundreds of sunburnt tourists. Medewi proved to be the answer and the Retreat was second-to-none.
We stayed in Soka 1, a large, self-contained room with kitchen, large bathroom and a huge room that easily catered for the 3 of us. The staff at the Retreat were AMAZING! They greeting us with smiles, provided us with all the help we needed and bent over backwards to ensure our stay was memorable. Even their management from the Head Office in Sanur came down to the Retreat to run the evening entertainment! I felt like we were valued guests and not just another check-in dollar. On the review it states that they don't have WiFi, but recently they invested in a new system and to be honest, it was a faster service than I have in Australia. I know we were suppose to be retreating from www but it's great to know you have it if needed. The way the Retreat is arranged means it never feels over-crowded, rooms were cleaned daily and staff were always cleaning to ensure guests had a spick and span place to relax. Each morning we would have a great breakfast and then head off to the amazing surf at Medewi Beach. We did the journey to the beach on a local bus (running along the main road every 10 minutes and costing a mere 5000 Rupiah each - 50 Australian cents at the time of writing). This was also a great way to meet locals and the drivers and 'bus ushers' were very accommodating. At Medewi Beach we were welcomed by several Balinese surfers who gave us the low down on when and where to surf, local information and basically gave us a hassle free week as they welcomed us to their waves, lifestyle and culture. Will we go back? You can bet your bottom dollar! Will we stay at the Retreat again? You bet!!
I haven't written such a praising review before but Medewi Bay Retreat deserves it. Well done to all the staff, the locals and generally, Bali for giving us some great memories and experiences.
I would recommend organising a taxi through the Retreat when booking. It costs us $60 Aus (I little more than a taxi off the street) but the service was great, straight to the door and the driver, Harry, was great!

People are starting to slowly but surely realise this break is well worth the drive. Depending on where you're coming from Medewi Beach is about 2-3 hours from the main accommodation spots....If you're in Canggu/Tanah Lot you're closer than Kuta/Legian/Airport as it's west northwest of these busy spots.
Know that's it's only 50-65 kilometres from these spots however, Bali traffic is always crazy...having said that, the road is actually of very good quality and once you're beyond Tanah Lot 'area' it's pretty easy going and a snooze it always an option!
Once at Medewi you will see a number of signs including a large 'Medewi Beach/Pantai Medewi' old, rusted (in a cool way!) sign plus various restaurant and hotel signs...this humble little street is Medewi's 'main' strip!
When at the end of this road you will see Medewi Beach Cottages on the left and the new Bombora Medewi Wave Lodge on your right (looking to sea).
The best place to go out is about 20-30 metres to the left or right of this main 'carpark' area.
Keep an eye on tides as high tide is preferable for surfing and generally makes the beach look much more beautiful in general. Yes, there are rocks, plenty of black volcanic rocks but again, high tide makes these easier to deal with and they're not sharp (unlike reefs) ...
Once out in surf you can enjoy LONG, glassy left handers...I have a 1:18min ride on my mobile! Wave size vary but even when big are gentle peelers - average about 3-5 up to 15 but that's rare..
It's prob not the best beach for families/kids as the rocks override the sand so no castles here unfortunately...having said that it's nice to show the kids a different beach and there are plenty of little rock pools to explore in low tide.
There is a great ocean front restaurant as well as massages available when not surfing/swimming..
SUNSETS at Medewi are simply stunning without the lights and chaos of Kuta etc. the serenity in and out of the water makes this spot pretty darn magical.
Away from the beach it is TRULY worth going for a drive around the rice fields and river. Here you will see authentic, untouched Bali...the greens and shapes of the rice field are a photographers dream. Farmers working in the fields, kids running around their homes and stunning rivers windng through the greenery including huge palm trees...yes, authentic, amazing Bali at it's best.
About 10-15 mins from Medewi is a Hindu temple..well there are six temples..it's a huge area and all on the beach front. Again, some awesome photos to be taken with the ocean crashing against the various statues. (I will get the name but it's well known in the area and about 10-15 mins north of Medewi township).

Let me start this of by saying that I had never surfed before. I had read on some website that this was a good place to learn. I was cycling the island with a friend and while we stopped here I decided to check it out. An "instucter" with a medewi surf shop/ the "medewi board riders club" under the guidence of a guy named "roberto" who owned the shop and whose parents owned the guest house I stayed in taught me how to surf. The guest house had no name, but was directly across the street from the office of the "medewi board riders club." He taught me nothing I couldn't figure out on my own, nothing about surf etiquette, which I had to later look up before fully realizing the scam I had fallen into, and had charged me 200000 rp. Which is absurd here. Then to top it off the "medewi board riders club" as well as a couple of westerners that were there were very insistent that I have to buy a tshirt otherwise I may be hassled by the locals.
I know a little about surf culture and know that localism can be dangerous. So I bought the tshirt for 200000 rp, thinking I'd be aloud to finish my goal to learn how to surf here. I was extremely wrong.
The first sign of the scam was the "president" of the "medewi board riders club", who was the same guy that interupted my lunch to make the first attempt at a sale to me, came to my room and very forcefully tried to make my travel buddy buy a tshirt despite the fact that he had no intention of surfing or even going to the beach and was planning on leaving me the next day. And I mean knocked on our door and tried to force his way in to accomplish this.
At this point I was still in the water being taught what an 8 year old could figure out, thinking I would stay here for atleast a week. It started to rain. So we took a break. When the rain stopped my instructor suggested I move to the more crowded break, because I was progressing so quickly, having taught me nothing about etiquette. I agreed because I thought the same and wanted bigger waves. Immediattly a kid who was very experienced began surfing very close to me while I was paddling out. A white wave crashed on me. So, as I was taught by my "instructor", I flipped over and let the wave wash over me. When I surfaced some kid was floating near me grasping his leg. I inquired as to whether he was okay. He briefly stopped grasping his leg and looked at me. Which seemed to me a look of "ok hes looking at me" and not a look of anger. I thought it was weird and assumed he'd hurt himself on the shallow rock that are everywhere in medewi. So I continued my attempt at surfing. 15 minutes later some kid paddled out to me stating I had "dropped the grom." This bring my first day ever surfing I had no idea what he was talking about. He said I had hurt this kid and I should pay him 50k rp. He said the kid was bleeding, not bleeding, he had to go to the hospital. I'm trained in first aid and have a fully stocked first aid kit so I went in and checked him out. He had two old scars on his thigh. When I realized there was no, swelling, bleeding, or discoloration I said he didn't hit him and he didn't need to go to the hospital. The older guys that had suddenly gathered around changed the story from hospital to he needed a massage to make it right. They were very demanding and insisted that I pay 5 times the amount it would cost me to get one. Being outnumbered I paid. To make things worse, a fin on the board I had rented had broken during this ghost collison. So I had to pay for that as well under threat if physical violence. Then, again to add to this terrible first time surfing experience, when trying to settle up with our terrible guest house I literally had to write out our expenses, which I could easily do in my head, to get her to give us correct change. I have since been surfing in kuta and while packed and scam heavy I was atleast treated with decency and respect on the water. I sincerely hope this same experience never happens to anyone else and that maybe this post will somehow make it back to medewi. That community could have bennifited from several days of me renting a board, paying for lessons, buying food and alcohol, paying for housing, and leaving positive reviews about it for the world. Instead a few greedy individuals got a small amount of money and I want nothing more than for noone to ever go there.

I wish I read the other review before going. The same thing happened to us. I am an experienced surfer but my girlfriend is just learning.
The Medewi board riders club shop will try to screw you. The guy "Roberto" is so shady.
!!!!! BEWARE!!!!
He did not screw in all the fins, so I would have lost one and have to pay. That's what happened to the other guy. Thankfully for some reason I checked.
He also did not tie the leash cord on my girlfriends board so it would have come undone and she would loose the board in the rocks. Thankfully we went to the beach break.
Also check for repaired fins, they will break. One broke on a turn, he made me pay.
He also told us to paddle out at low tide, which at that spot is very unsafe for a beginner. Thankfully we got one too many cuts on the rocks and decided to call it for the day. That is the only reason we didn't get completely robbed. If we had done what Roberto told us I would have lost a fin. My girlfriend would have lost her board into the rocks at low tide, which would have put dozing of dings in it. To add to that, she would have had to swim in over razor sharp reef to get her board back. This "little" scam could have put her in serious danger as well as literally robbing us after they set the boards up to break.
If you pull into town and anyone tries to sell you a cheap room off the street say NO. We also got hassled into the same unnamed home stay across from the shop.
I really hope these reviews help someone else not get taken advantage of or seriously injured.

If you're researching why travel to Medewi, you will never need to post a complaint about coughing up a few bucks for a t-shrit or $20 board hire or getting smashed by waves. There's a point to supporting locals surfing one of the longest left hand breaks in the world. Indonesians struggle to make something of a career in sport but intuitively recognise the necessity to present positive role models to a youth culture with one foot in the ghetto.
Everyone who visits Medewi to surf will be offered the same opportunity to invest in their local surfer's future.. Yep, my fiance and I bought T-shirts & hired boards. The local's appreciated our gesture & were always helpful thereafter.. offering travel information, hooking us up with a couple of tours that saved us heaps of money in comparison to the westernised tour operators.
Value for Money:: We stayed "Kirra" guest house on the hill, it had A/C, was very clean and $1-4 home delivered meals ensured our every need was met. One bug bear was that the hill area is predominantly Muslim, so get ready for waking 4am prayers. The moped hire was $6 per day so we rode 2 mins to the beach each day (or 15min walk). If you bring your own boards, the locals let you keep your boards in their beach shack so you wont have to ferry them around all the time. Get with the local surfer's program, chip in a few bucks and they'll make your holiday so much better and less expensive. Overall the week was so flippin' inexpensive its ridiculous to critique on element over the entire experience.
The Surf:: Surfing at sunrise was the go, no crowd, just clean sets. The afternoons were crowded but more choppy with the afternoon winds. Like all over Bali, drop-ins and snaking will happen, but no one gets hurt if you're good enough. Beginners are better off staying off the point and catching sizeable whitewash from the outside second break, which still gives a 30 second ride.
In closing, we'll return, probably stay at the Medewi Beach Cottage (right on the surf point) to be purely lazy.

If you go there beware of the "surf boarders club" they intimidate you in to purchasing tshirt at around RP 200 thou. Ok not a great stretch for a westerner but you should know that if their activity and reasons to intimidate you for that amount are legitimate why don't they do it when the police are there? They are not local Balinese by the way, so don't think your contributing to the village good. Take only small change and hide any amount over 50 thou. Apart from the mafia, the surf can be great depending on conditions. Use the bungalows pool for 40 thou if your a surf widow! Restaurant with view pretty nice to sit at. Enjoy watching the fisherman.

Quiet, and relaxed just like Bali was 30 yrs ago. We stay at Medewi Bay Retreat which have some great packages for those who want to keep coming back to this gorgeous little gem of a place on the west coast of Bali, about 2.5 hrs north west of Denpasar, you will find glistening, stunning black beaches where you find the most relaxed and friendly locals that never hassell and just want to make sure your trip is amazing.
The Waterfall is an experience all 875 steps, the food is amazing and fresh, the hotels are comfortable and clean some of the resorts on the beach are incredible.
But don't tell anyone!!

We stayed at dikaloha, a house about 800m from the medewi point. Very peaceful and quiet, we were the only people staying. Not much to do apart from relax (cheap massage available on the beach) if you're not here for the surf. Our surf guide Soep was great, very reasonable and really helpful. His price included board rental and took us out on our own for the day (private tuition). We would really recommend giving Soep a call if you're in the area, he's a local who has been surfing here since he was 12 years old so knows all the best spots and times for surfers of all levels.

I walked to Medewi from a few kms south. Good surfing options north and south of the left hand point break but the point is the jewel in the crown. Pity it gets so crowded but if you put in the time and respect to others you will be rewarded. Some good accommodation and food options on the road that leads to the point catering for all budget types. Halfway along is a small laundry / warung / surfboard hire shop. Good people and best motorbike rental prices in Medewi - 60,000 rp a day for a good bike with board racks and helmets.

After accommodation for family on beachfront. Can anyone give any suggestions of some nice places to stay with direct access for surfing ?

Is there any way you can speed the word about the Medewi Board Riders surf shop scam? What they are doing there could seriously injure someone, along with their threats of physical violence.

I wish I read the other review before going. The same thing happened to us. I am an experienced surfer but my girlfriend is just learning.
The Medewi board riders club shop will try to screw you. The guy "Roberto" is so shady.
!!!!! BEWARE!!!!
He did not screw in all the fins, so I would have lost one and have to pay. That's what happened to the other guy. Thankfully for some reason I checked.
He also did not tie the leash cord on my girlfriends board so it would have come undone and she would loose the board in the rocks. Thankfully we went to the beach break.
Also check for repaired fins, they will break. One broke on a turn, he made me pay.
He also told us to paddle out at low tide, which at that spot is very unsafe for a beginner. Thankfully we got one too many cuts on the rocks and decided to call it for the day. That is the only reason we didn't get completely robbed. If we had done what Roberto told us I would have lost a fin. My girlfriend would have lost her board into the rocks at low tide, which would have put dozing of dings in it. To add to that, she would have had to swim in over razor sharp reef to get her board back. This "little" scam could have put her in serious danger as well as literally robbing us after they set the boards up to break.
If you pull into town and anyone tries to sell you a cheap room off the street say NO. We also got hassled into the same unnamed home stay across from the shop.
I really hope these reviews help someone else not get taken advantage of or seriously injured.
