Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a monument and popular tourist attraction in Kanyakumari, Tamilnadu.
The memorial stands on a rock located about 500 meters off the land. The Arabian sea, the bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meet here.
The memorial was built in the honour of Swami Vivekananda, who swam to this rock , meditated and achieved enlightenment. Thereafter he went to Chicago's Parliament of World's Religions in 1893 and the rest is history.
The present day's memorial was built in 1970 by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee under the able leadership of the late Eknath Ranade. The architecture of the memorial is a mix of architecture of Bengal, Tamilnadu and the Belur Math of Ramakrishna Mission. A life size bronze statue of Swamiji is installed in the main hall. There is an exhibition hall and souvenir shop. The memorial is open from 8 am to 4 pm on all days.
There is a small rock formation which is revered as the foot print of Kanyakumari or devi Parvati. A statue of Thiruvalluvar is coming up on a nearby rock. The memorial fills one with serenity.
The rock is accessible from the land by ferries which operate as per the memorial's timing. The ordinary fare is ₹50/- and the special fare ₹200/-. The entry fee for memorial is ₹20/- All the tickets can be bought from the booking counter at jetty or can be booked online. Allow at least 3 to 4 hours to this visit because boarding the ferry takes up at least 1.5 hours because of long queues. There is no parking near the jetty and a small parking place is available near the Gandhi Mandap.
There is no sign board to guide the tourists and it is difficult for the first time visitors to find the ways.
The conditions in and around the jetty are underwhelming and must be improved because it depletes the overall experience drastically.

We reached the boarding point quite early at 0900 hrs but there was a huge line - waiting time of around 1 hr on a weekday. When we were coming back around 1200 hrs, surprisingly the waiting was only 10-15 minutes. If you want to bypass the queue, you can pay a premium, however this is only while going to the Rock memorial. The boat ride is only 5-7 minutes and on reaching you need to buy another ticket if you want to go inside the memorial including the meditation hall. Breathtaking scenery and inside the meditation hall, one can feel the positive vibes. For return, again you have to stand in a line - luckily it is covered to provide shade from the Sun. If you get opportunity, better to go in evening say 4 pm

We took a boat ride to reach the Vivekanand rocks, The boat takes 30 minutes to reach there, On the top there is a huge Thyan kaksh there where u can energize yourself with a peaceful and soundless atmosphere.

On the front of the Vivekanand rocks there is a small temple. The walkway around the vivekanand memorial from which we get better views of all three seas comes together.

It's a beautiful place I must recommend not to visit during the afternoon only visit in the morning or in the evening. ⛵ Boat ride will cost nominal charges around 100/- per person

Kanyakumari is a special destination in many different ways. When we think about Southernmost tip of the India, we remember Kanyakumari and at the same time when we think about Kanyakumari, we remember Vivekananda Rock. Vivekananda Rock is the most visited and Most crowded place of Kanyakumari. Vivekananda Rock memorial was built as a mark of respect to the legendary Swami Vivekananda and Inaugurated by then the President of India Shri V.V.Giri on 02-Sep-1970.

We have visited Kanyakumari during last week of December 2023 and this is third time I visited and in all the three times I was excited to visit Vivekananda Rock as this is so natural and beautiful location of Sothern tip. This is located in Southern tip of the Country on small island which is inside the Ocean where all three oceans meet at one place.

Interesting Facts about Vivekananda Rock:
1. Located at such a Unique location that to on small Island inside Ocean where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean converge.
2. This is the spot where the great Indian spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda meditated and attained enlightenment in 1892.
3. Vivekananda Rock memorial is built on the top of one rock which is adjacent to another rock on which Thiruvalluvar Statue is installed.
4. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial houses two main structures namely Vivekananda Mandapam and Shripada Mandapam.
5. Vivekananda attained enlightenment at this place while sitting on rock and meditating.

Vivekananda memorial is built on a rock in sea which is approachable by motor boat But life jacket provided are unhygienic.
In the memorial one has to put off shoes which is bit inconvenient to senior citizens. A good place for photography. Also one bridge connecting with the memorial of famous poet is on the verge of commissioning

The Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari is a stunning monument situated on a small island off the southernmost tip of India. This serene spot, dedicated to Swami Vivekananda, offers breathtaking views of the confluence of the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea. A visit here is both spiritually uplifting and visually captivating, making it a must-see destination in Kanyakumari.

Was there on a Monday morning around 9 am and there was no rush in ticket counter or in assembly area. Was able to board jetty within 15 min. Vivekanda rock was a wonderful and peaceful experience. Few tourists were making nuisance in meditation area though. As usual we indian really lacks public civility.

It was a horrifying experience. We went on public holiday and I recommend people not go there on peak days. It was really hot that day. We waited for 3 hours in heat queue(~1km) and then got on the ferry. Coming back from island was also a pain as there were no shades and we had to queue for 1hr. Trust me I am from Odisha's Angul where there are a lot of mines and temp can go 42C+ on peak summers, so when I say it was very unmanageable hot in that area, in Septemeber, I mean it.
1- dont go in peak days.
2-dont go on hot days.

Though the view from island was good, not the very best, but good.

As you reach the boat queue, it looks good with a single queue. But while approaching the boat, they ask men and women to go in separate lines and enter boat for different entries. Inside again families can reunite - Ridiculous!

They collect Rs75 for to and fro boat ticket and once you reach the rock memorial, you need to buy another entry ticket. Every single person who comes by boat has to buy another entry ticket. Why not they combine the tickets and sell in one point? No point in standing in queues two times for a single trip.

As you enter the rock memorial, they want you to remove your shoes and go barefooted. During day time (boat service is only till 4pm), it’s so hot and why do they expect us to walk on the rock with barefoot - only the authorities will know the answer.

Boats are very old, poorly maintained.

Kanyakumari is projected as a global tourist destination and we need to update ourselves to global standards. Currently it’s not up to the mark for even a local traveler.

For the views it’s amazing, but no doubt the crowd management for the tourist is worst. We visited the kanyakumari rock early morning. Crazy line and there are no online tickets available. You have to stand in the queue for hours in scorching sun. There are 2 lines one is for Rs.75 per person general line and the other one is for Rs.300 special line. No doubt crowd is the same for both. And the management of Poompuhar shipping (a private ferry service to the rock) is worst. Illiterate people who don’t know how to behave and handle elderly and children. They just push through in the line & act like they own the rock memorial. Rs.300 ticket people do get a chance to board the boat early as they send more people from the Rs.300 line to board the boat first and then the Rs.75 line. Life jackets are useless and just for show. Also, again there are charges Rs. 30 per person on the rock to visit the temple (really don’t know why is this needed). After you are done, you can board the boat here there is no different line for 75rs and 300rs ticket. Everyone boards the same boat on first come first serve basis. When we visited the rock, Thiruvalluvar statue was closed still the useless shipping company charged us the same. There is nothing much to do on that rock, nothing to read or learn about swami Vivekanand ji. Total mismanagement and crazy crowd. Instead it is more peaceful at the sunset point or at the beach to look throughj the water and the views.
