We booked out the boat for two people which was more than enough, if not too much as it has 3 bedrooms. We wanted a romantic cruise on the lake and this was the best way. The staff were lovely, the boat was to a good standard.

It’s not a brand new boat but as standards go in India it was more than sufficient. The food was tasty and more than what we could eat.

The boat docked in a quiet part of the lake with only one other boat nearby.

Best feature about the boat was that the doors completely shut at night, keeping all mozzies and other wildlife out which made the stay very comfortable.

We also had a lovely canoe trip for and hour built into the price so would recommend it for anyone wishing to experience an affordable houseboat on the lake.

Great tour of Kerala Backwaters and very reasonably priced at Rs1000 per person for the day on a paddle boat (8am to 4pm / up to 6 people).

Pick up and drop of nearby the centre of town and Breakfast and Lunch included in the price.

Tour guide is knowledgable and friendly and would definitely recommend the day trip on the smaller paddle boat to see the true backwaters.

I had the most amazing time seeing the sunset on The Backwaters in a lovely spacious boat, the rooms are incredibly large and have a very modern bathroom. I enjoyed a traditional style Kerala dinner & breakfast on board as well as being able to watch the sunrise. Jose also organised a kayaking trip for me to see the smaller parts of The Backwaters that the larger boats can’t go, followed by a traditional Kerala lunch in the village provided by a lovely kind couple.
It was definitely the highlight of my Indian trip and I loved how it was all organised, drama free and very reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend Kalappura Tours.

The day started with a ferry ride to our guide Ani's village where we had a delicious breakfast by the water outside his house. Then we spent most of the day canoeing through the backwaters - a lovely and relaxing time - stopping once for a coconut/snack/chai break. Before taking the ferry back, we returned to Ani's house where we were served a delicious lunch thali. We had a great day and really enjoyed Ani's company and conversation. We highly recommend booking through Kalappura tours. We also had a great stay at Kalappura Guesthouse (see our other review on that page).

I met Jose in his Kalappura homestay. I was interested in staying on a boat, but travelling solo means it's hard to find people to share. Jose told me to enjoy my day at Alleppey while he organised for me. This is on a last minute’s request, but he gave me a superb price for one, and has just another lovely couple join for a day tour.

At night, I have the boat entirely to myself for star-gazing. Kalappura Houseboat is large and spacious. The bed is king size and luxurious, and shower’s hot. Sandeep the chef set up lunch on the deck with a panoramic view of the lake, and he sweetly cooked masala fish (mostly because Jose took mental note that it is my favourite dish as I mentioned to him briefly) and the boatsmen especially Sarath, are sweet. They made sure they are always there for you if you need them, but also giving you space to enjoy the boat in peace and tranquility.

Jose checks once in a while via text to make sure all’s well. At the end of the trip, he called to check that I am happy, and even arranged for me a tuk tuk to my next homestay by the beach! Extremely thoughtful experience. I can feel that their service came from the heart, and I feel like family.

Couldn’t recommend this houseboat experience more, I’ve been in India four months and it’s up there with one of my best experiences. The guys on board were so friendly and cooked us so many amazing spreads for lunch/dinner/breakfast. The views are stunning, make sure to set your alarm for sunrise. We viewed quite a few boats and Jose was for sure one of the best! Very clean and spacious. Surprisingly no where near as many mosquitos as we thought there might be, just remember to keep bedroom doors shut just in case, we accidentally left ours open and the flys swarmed by the lights. Jose was lovely and reliable.

I went on three boat trips that Jose at Kalppura Homestay went out of his way to organise at a fair price. The morning houseboat trip was really comfortable and relaxing looking at the wonderful scenery. A really nice breakfast on the boat too. I did two trips on the small boat at sunrise and at sunset which I highly recommend. It was fascinating watching the locals by their homes and being so close to the water, scenery and wildlife. Just beautiful. The light produced stunning reflections of the scenery on the water which made some great photos. Not to be missed!

Having stayed at Kalappura homestay my friend and I then also booked the houseboat for the next night. The advise and recommendations we received was great. Whilst the main Kalappura houseboat wasn't available the one we had was really lovely and the captain and chef were friendly, professional and very competent. We had more than enough space, the facilities were very good and the food was incredible. The route the boat took was very relaxing and pretty and the canoe ride a really lovely addition. Nothing was too much for those who helped make this a really lovely and thoroughly relaxing experience. Cannot recommend enough.

Kalappura Homestay & Houseboats is a rare combo package offering affordable homestay and backwater tour. Set amidst the greenery in the background of Vembanad Backwaters, the homestay offers comfortable accommodation with traditional kerala cuisines. We booked a package for 1 Night/2 Days which included the first day at Kalappura homestay and the next day in their houseboat. The package included all meals, one night stay and day cruise in the backwaters from 10am to 4pm. The rooms are comfortable and spacious with all the modern amenities. Experience in the houseboat was quite cozy with friendly guide and crew. All the meals in the homestay and the houseboat was homemade and delicious. Really enjoyed this beautiful experience.

Me and my girlfriend spent the night on this perfect boat. Yhe staff was amazing ang the boat was also. The perfect for seeing wildlife and just rrlaxing and watching the world go by. There was even a small cannoe included so we could go down the smaller backwaters which was a real plus. The boat docked away from other boats where it was peacful and we could watch the sun set. A perfect day woth perfect hosts. Great value for money.
