A very moving visit to Fugitives' Drift where the few survivors of the battle at Isandlwana crossed the Buffalo River to escape the perusing Zulu Warriors. The memorial to Lieutenants Melville and Coghill is very moving

Go stay at the Fugitives Drift Lodge and take the 3 tours. You will not regret it, but you need to stay 3 nights to get the best out of it.

This strip of river is actually on site of the Fugitive's Drift Lodge and Hotel. A guide from the office will take you and relay this amazing story. A must to visit.

See it , do it and learn from it . The bravery of both sides is unbelievable . The heroics of the men with so many VC's won on that day is unfathomable

Overlooking Fugitive's Drift and then the site of Coghill and Melville's grave was an experience that was special. Seeing Giraffes and Impala on the way to and from the Drift, made it even more special.

Get a guide for a tour, at Iswandlwana without one you just wont get the battle history or understand what came to pass (watch Zulu Dawn with Burt Lancaster). Rorke's Drift is the same, however its possible there to do a self tour if required.

We visited both the Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift battlefields where the British suffered one of their most ignominious defeats. It was easy to see how this happened as the British were so exposed and the Zulus knew the lie of the land so much better....More

What would be suitable clothing and footwear for a two day stay and the tours at Fugitive's Lodge in September?

I would suggest comfortable walking shoes (no sandals or flipflops). In terms of clothing, long trousers are my personal preference if you're walking on trails but shorts should be fine.
