My husband and I took the Hjordis boat ride and it was nice. We had been trying to do this for a couple years but finally did it. It was a day with a light wind so we were able to get all the sails up, but did need some occasional help form the motor. The captain was very knowledgeable... More

Nestled right into the fish market and Angry Trout area of the bay in Grand Marais this little gem has lots to offer. On our visit we saw people going out on sailing trips and seeing logging exhibits as well as a nice little reference library and some local things for sale. What a gem. Stop in a feel welcomed.... While I have always given outstanding reviews to the courses, instructors and activities at the North House Folk School, I must sound the alert about the "boat ride" on the Hjordis. This 50 foot gaff rigged schooner is great to see sailing in and out of Grand Marais harbor. But thats about it. You don't need to spend $45 per... More

My wife signed up for a North House 2 day class months ago and was very excited to go to the class. We took 3 days of vacation from work, drove seven hours to Grand Marais and booked 3 days of hotel accomidations to only find out after the class was to start that the instructor for the class did... We are so sorry that this happened and apologize for the wasted time, money and effort that it caused you. This is completely out of the ordinary for the school, and has only happened a few times in the school's 19-year history. It was a first-time instructor at the school, and our program coordinator had communicated with the him the... More

The North House Folk School is a unique, wonderful experience on the North Shore of Lake Superior. The staff are helpful and friendly, the instructors extremely knowledgeable. The list of available courses offered throughout the year is mind-boggling.

NHFS is a terrific place to enjoy Lake Superior, the small bay at Grand Marais and take a class in a wide range of 'hand made' subjects.

We know one of the musicians performing at this year's Unplugged in Grand Marais, so we drove down from Winnipeg to take in the taping of NPR's Mountain Music. Our time was short (we had to move on after one night), but it was clear to us that the North House Folk School is a fantastic place to spend time.... More

Would love to take a class here, but even stopping in is a treat. Great gift shop of handmade items you won't find anyplace else. Want to learn to build a boat? How about make your own shoes? Carve wood? Eat out of the woods? Great place -- stop by.

We stopped by this place after having lunch at the restaurant next door. The staff were friendly and gave us the magazine that shows the classes that they offer. Inside the building are some of the items they make such as the canoe, kayak, and other items for sale at the Gift Shop. Outside are more interesting items such as... More
