The building for the Salt Marsh Nature Center is open only weekends (according to its website). About half of The Salt Marsh Nature Trail runs parallel to Gerritsen Creek and is pretty good for birdwatching or a relaxing hike. The second part of the trail loops through overgrown fields, not particularly good for birdwatching. Use bug spray in the summer.... More

June 9, a sunny and warm day, is important in my family. My wife went to the ceremony where she became a naturalized citizen, while my son attended the orientation at the Mark Twain middle school. On our way to the school, my son and I visited the Salt Marsh Nature Center. The center itself was closed, but we walked... More

The salt marsh is at the far end of Brooklyn but worth a trip, especially if you're visiting other sites at the southern end of Brooklyn, like Coney Island or the New York Aquarium. It's a quiet, lovely walk by the marsh, where one may spot birds, such as cormorants, various ducks, egrets, and osprey. There is a concession there,... More

The Salt Marsh Nature Center is a little gem off most travelers' beaten path. The Center itself is beautiful inside and out, featuring the work of renowned designers Chermayeff & Geismar (the ones behind the NBC peacock and the Chase bank logo). Inside the Center is a well-lit, pleasant library with tables and chairs, educational displays, and a live terrapin... More

You have to remember that it is Brooklyn, not the OBX or the Glades, and you'd be fine. For the urban location it's quite good, making for a nice walk and a bit of scenery. The marsh trail has re-opened recently, offering a hike listed as 0.8 miles, winding through the grassy marshland with the usual complement of waterfowl and... More
