Steele Highway is very easy to travel and gives you easy access to most of Fairbanks, Chena Hot Springs, overlooks to easily view the Northern Lights, University of Alaska and much more.

Steese Hwy is a well maintained highway that leads to many points of interest. It is not a destination in itself, but rather a means to other destinations.

Lovely, lonely highway. Filled with wonderful views, wildlife, and perfectly timed roadside rests. Wish we would have known there was not going to be one gas station.

We drove on the Steese Highway for four consecutive nights to catch the Auroras. There was a lot of snow, but the highway is well-maintained. There were a few icy spots and we had to drive really slowly, but the drivers behind us were patient and understanding. On Hwy 6 we turned off right to the Cleary Summit to wait... More

Well maintained, not much ice on it. Of course we only drove from Fairbanks to the Chena Hot Springs Road. It is a pretty drive.

At 1st this road was confusing because as we headed north from Fairbanks it had many names: Hsy, Expy, Old Steese, Rt. 2 Rt. 6! The road was well maintained for the 31 minutes we used it to our destination. We did see a vehicle off the road and in a ditch because of ice on the road, so we... More

Fairbanks local people are super nice and helpful. They said if we go up to new steese highway and pass weigh scale station and go up to the fox spot, there is a hillside area that you can view northern light. We drove on steese highway and needless to say it is tons and tons of snow. Be really really... More

There's a lot to see along this road that tells a great deal about this part of Alaska. I saw this highway as part of a day's exploration that ended with a spectacular viewing of the aurora late at night. Get off the road wherever there is something to see, and learn about it.

I drove the Steese/Richardson Highway from Fairbanks to Anchorage (450 miles) on Sept. 7, 2016. This is one of the most beautiful drives that i have ever been on. It was 450 miles of mountains, glaciers, lakes, braided rivers, creeks and so much more. For the most part, the road is paved, but there are stretches with gravel and potholes... More
