Everyone is right when they tell you to avoid the bridge during rush hour traffic, both morning and evening. But also be aware that it boasts the only stop light between the Mexican border and Canadian border. This happens when the bridge opens for marine traffic on the Columbia River. We have watched paddle wheelers, large barges and tall sail boats pass through the open span. We have also taken our boat underneath the bridge on many occasions, and it is fascinating to see the under side as well.

This bridge recently reached 100 years of age. We had the good fortune to be on the Vancouver Renaissance Trail when it was opened to allow barge traffic to pass. Or course drivers on I-5 were probably not as pleased. I understand the span opens 10 to 20 times a month. Interesting to watch.

Again our elected leaders have failed us. Millions spend on needless studies. They could have fixed this problem by now. I try to avoid this rout and now mostly use I205. I traveled across this bridge most of my life. It is always dangerous and crowded and slow. I finally moved to WA. That was the best choice. There is plenty of space to add lanes. They just need to look and see what other cities have done.

Portland and Vancouver are like Minneapolis and St Paul only in two different states. The bridge is fun to experience as you go across and realize half your car is one state and the other in another.

The I-5 Corridor is a main artery of transit up and down the west coast. It is not surprising that this bridge suffers from heavy traffic as it could stand to be twice as wide as it is. There has been much controversy over replacement and no real progress. That said, if you check your traffic app before you go there, you can take advantage of getting easily across in off hours.
Consider how old it is before you judge it's appearance and you will find the beauty in its construction and functionality.
One of my favorite photos has this bridge in the background and you can get great views from the Washington side of the Columbia.

I have lived in Vancouver for 15 years, and finally took my first walk over this bridge. It was interesting to view the river and Mt. Hood from the bridge.

Just another run of the mill ugly bridges. Drive across it and one says "whaaaaaa? It is an ugly just functional bridge. The only reason to go see it is if you have to cross it to get somewhere.

It is a great view of Mount Hood, on a clear day, while traveling over the Columbia River. Enjoying the view from a car is difficult though, as traffic can be so absolutely terrible at this spot. If you are traveling across the I-5 Interstate Bridge, when you don't have to go to work or fulfill an appointment, choose your timing well, and don't be in a hurry. Many driver's travel this route, and peak traffic hours can result in bumper to bumper traffic, for sure.

It's an ugly old bridge that's living on borrowed time, you MUST drive over it if you want to go anywhere interesting around here, and taking a look to check it out while driving at 60MPH would be plain idiocy!
It's cool to get stuck on it on a summer's afternoon when you are not trying to get anywhere in particular..but just once! It makes kinda cool yet distracting shadows as you drive across it when it's sunny...um yea...that's about it. Just get the hell off it before you crash and pay attention while you're doing so!
