Description:

The Owens-Thomas House is considered by architectural historians to be one...

The Owens-Thomas House is considered by architectural historians to be one of the finest examples of English Regency architecture in America. Inspired by classical antiquity, this style of architecture takes its name from England’s King George IV, who ruled as Prince Regent from 1811 to 1820.The house was designed by the young English architect William Jay, one of the first professionally-trained architects practicing in the United States. The elegant residence was built from 1816 to 1819 for cotton merchant and banker Richard Richardson and his wife Francis Bolton. Mr. Richardson’s brother-in-law was married to Ann Jay, the architect’s sister. Three years after the house’s completion, Richardson suffered financial losses and sold his house, which later came under possession of the Bank of the United States.

We went on the free museum day, so the normal tour might be different. But it's a good opportunity to check out one of the many historic homes in Savannah. It has some pretty interesting decor and the staff are very knowledgeable. Check it out!

In Savannah for the first time, we learned that the three Telfair Museums offer a package deal in which one price gains admission to all three sites: the Telfair Academy, the Jepson Center, and the Owens-Thomas House. We enjoyed all three, but this house was our favorite. There are guided tours every 15 minutes, so we did not have to... More

We decided to do the Telfair experience and paid $20 to visit all 3 museums, however this tour alone was worth the money. We had a great tour guide who really new the house and family. The rooms are decorated very nicely and you get to go into the rooms instead of standing in a door way behind a rope.... More

I lucked out and had a private tour, seeing as I was the last one of the day. The lovely guide (the one with a British accent) was quite knowledgable and I found it to be one of the most interesting houses I've ever toured. So many ties to other sites in Savannah.

This home is beautiful and full of antique furniture. It's a look back in time to the old south. The house lots of unique features and is well maintained by the Museum.

Take the tour if you want to get a great overview of this beautiful mansion. If you're a Savannah history buff this is a stop that is well worth your time. The house has a lot of unusual features.

Who knew that our ancestors had indoor plumbing and a lavatory system that early. These were fed from three large cisterns holding thousands of gallons of water catch. Very sophisticated and one of the earliest in the country. Drinking water was from a well and not part of the plumbing. The house is well appointed with period furnishings, many of... More

If you have time to visit just one house while in savannah, I would highly recommend OT house. The history behind the house is fascinating and the architecture helps you travel through time. The entrance fee, along with OT also includes Jepson center and Telfair museum, so $20 entry fee goes a long way. The tours at OT are very... More
