- Michelle K8 contributionsNice history lessonThis is a hidden gem! Lots of good history to learn or be reminded about. It was nice to have a historical site to go with our pups. I only wish they were more specific on their website about the timing of the cannon firings. We would have avoided those times because the dogs didn't it well. Overall, highly recommend.Dear Guest, Thank you for visiting, and for your feedback about the cannon firings. We are glad you enjoyed learning about the fort's fascinating history, and hope to welcome you back soon! - Michael FMyrtle Beach, South Carolina1,376 contributionsGreat Historic SiteWe really enjoyed seeing this very old fort on the Savannah River. There is an admission charged but it’s well worth the cost. After touring the fort, we enjoyed seeing our host fire an old trifle and then a cannon. This is a small fort but filled with history.Dear Michael, We are so glad that you enjoyed your time at the fort! Our interactive programming definitely brings the fort's history to life. Thank you for visiting! Your admission helps us to continue to preserve the fort and share its amazing history with the public. Come back and see us soon! - Lissette A4 contributionsYou will enjoy learning about the life on the fort!I loved that this place had re-enactments of what life was in the fort long time ago. There was a fee to go in which was not much. I feel as if the fort needs a little TLC as you are entering it. The other thing observed is that they should make it interesting as you are driving in. Other than that it was a great place to visit. The re-enactments did their job.Dear Guest, We are pleased you enjoyed your time at the fort, and found our interactive programming interesting and informative. In response to your feedback on the drive in, the approach road to the fort is owned by the state, so it falls outside of our jurisdiction. Please rest assured that we are continually conducting preservation projects, and that your admission fee helps to keep our wonderful fort preserved and open to share with the public! Thank you for visiting and sharing your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back soon! We didn't have time to get to all the forts in the region but it was nice to be able to access mostly all of the fort and it was only ten dollars a person. Definitely a nice place to stop and explore on the drive down further south.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 September 2023

Many historic sites are lifeless, crumbling buildings. Not Old Fort Jackson. Aaron Bradford breathes life into this magnificent place! From the spot overlooking the beautiful Savannah River, he told us the stories of its relevance through time. He demonstrated and had volunteers signal with flags that could be seen for miles. At the cannon, he got everyone engaged in the firing. He demonstrated historical medicine. In the parade grounds, he brought it all together with a meaningful talk about why it mattered then and now. Highly recommended!

Pvt. Baker did an outstanding job, explaining in easy-to-understand detail, every topic he covered. Very informative. Very professional. Very knowledgable. Very entertaining. He even held the attention of the children in the tour audience. And a VERY accomplished musician (bugler) as well. Great job, Pvt. Baker. Thanks very much!

I’ve attended many historical re-enactments and forts, however this is by far one the best experiences I have ever had. The guide, Sgt Bradford did a wonderful job of explaining the history of the fort and answering questions. I am so glad I was able to attend. I highly recommend for anyone to stop and check this place out. You will not be disappointed!!

Fantastic guide at the 12 noon time slot on Sept 18th. We had the best tour guide ever. He was in character as a confederate soldier and very engaging and knowledgeable. This ended up being one of our favorite stops in Savannah during our 5 day trip. We learned so much! He ends the program with the firing of an actual canon. Highly recommend this to add to your Savannah itinerary. Wish we had gotten the guide’s name. He disappeared right after the presentation. We wanted to tip him and thank him but he was gone before we knew it. He really tied the history to todays time and stressed how important it is to understand history. Very relevant and on point. The guide is a true gem and I hope he is paid well.

Very interesting fort about 10 mins from Savannah. This fort (one of the oldest on the east coast) is well maintained and has staff dressed in traditional outfits from the era. All staff were very information and even eager to talk about the history of the fort and the surrounding area. At certain times during the day, the cannons are used which was interesting. You could follow a tour or walk around yourself and read info panels and check out the site.

This was an amazing experience—we have been to many re-enactments and historic forts up and down the East coast, and this one was the best, hands-down. It is very interactive, which we were not expecting. Sgt Bradford is very kind, entertaining, and passionate about teaching the fort’s history and my 7- and 11-year-old were captivated the entire time, despite 90-degree heat. I thought we would stay for a half an hour and we stayed for 2.5 hours! We highly recommend this historic attraction—it is a must-see!!

Only a short drive from downtown Savannah, the fort offers a hands-on and up close look at the Civil War history of the area. The historical reenactor who gave a living history tour was super knowledgeable and worth twice the price of admission. Was entertaining and educational for all ages.

Folks keep mentioning a tour guide. Are there actual tours with a specific schedule? Or are there just folks who will show you around if you approach them and ask questions? Thanks!

How far out of Savannah is fort jackson?
Buckeye_boy_614
Bexley, OH138 contributions
It’s fairly close to the historic section of Savannah. It’s probably a 10-15 minute drive, mostly along the same road. Signage could be a bit better so keep your eyes out. Once you turn left off the main road, the fort is about a 2 minute drive. The fort sits right on the river. Fort Pulaski is about another 10-15 minute drive on the same main road if you turn left as you exit Fort Jackson.

What all is included with coming during the cannon firing times? I see pictures of kids getting really interactive and id like my children to experience that when we visit.

Cannon firing presentations include a history of the site and its significance. When kids visit, we try to make our programming as interactive as possible, including mock drill and marching.
