Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

What a great place to visit and take pictures at. So much history of our founding families can be found here. The tombstones speak volumes, and you can only imagine what went on during the time period. The trees were breathtaking.

We took an Uber from downtown and walked around the cemetery. There are lots of old statues and grave sites to look at. The original colonists of Georgia have been moved and buried here. I wish we would have driven to have more time there. Due to Hurricane Matthew, they had to limit their hours. They closed at 2:00 pm... More

What a beautiful place. It seems a little odd to speak of a cemetery in that way but it was simply beautiful. the moss covered trees and rivers views are amazing. The statuary is beautiful. I would highly recommend taking a tour. We used Bonaventure Don. He was the quintessential guide!

So much to see, so many unique markers from years ago. A must see when in Savannah ga. A historic place to roam, see the craftsmanship of the hundreds of cemetery markers. There seems to be no two alike markers, each with its own history and a story all it's own. Its a must see, but plan on a lot... More

We loved this tour with Shannon Scott. He has so much knowledge about the cemetary. He is also very passionate about his story telling.

Go on a tour-it's an amazing place filled with natural beauty, amazing sculptures, and Masonic symbols. Our tour was over 2 hours and we were in awe. Photographers dream. We cannot wait to go back. Make sure you have comfortable walking shoes.

Lots of interesting gravestones. You might want to take a tour to get the most out of your visit. You could spend hours there.

I read the book "midnight in the garden of good and evil" and was interested to see the statue of the bird girl-it's not there anymore. The cemetery has very limited hours of access, and is overgrown, and not maintained.
