Be prepared for the unusual and imaginative at this museum housing works by non-mainstream artists, including the "whirligig", a 55-foot wind-powered sculpture, a 10-foot model of the Lusitania made entirely out of match sticks and a mobile that spans three floors.

AVAM typifies Baltimore - singular, creative, quirky, unforgettable, cool, edgy and fun. It is not about paintings on walls. AVAM organizes exhibits around 'themes' and finds people all over America who have expressed themselves in some way around that theme - I live in Baltimore and love to visit because I am always inspired and amazed by what human minds... My husband and I had such a wonderful time. Four floors, then another building down the street. So much to see. Well thought out, colorful. Make sure you come and plan to take your time. We were there for about 2 hours, as we were in a time crunch. Definitely could have stayed longer if time allowed for it. Would... More

This was a museum that interested me from the outside of the buildinbg while taking a trolley tour. There are four floors of art done by artist who have not had any training. The museum was a delight to go to and mesmerized me as some of the artwork captured the imagination such as a boat made from toothpicks (104,000... More

If you are looking for an interesting place to spend the day, AVAM is for you. I have been several times with my family and a few solo trips. You will not see anything like these exhibits at any other museum. It is creative and inspiring.

Excellent monthly craft making in the classroom of the AVAM. Cannot be complete with out a trip to the gift shop and fart machine near the restrooms.

If you are interested in creativity, uniqueness and clever art this is the place for you.You will find all mediums, many perspectives and some "how did they think to that". Spend an enjoyable morning or afternoon in a museum steps from the Baltimore Harbor waters. Great location.

Not your average museum, featuring unique and folk art and artists. My tweets always find something special at one or more of the exhibits. Events there are also special - check out the museum calendar. They have a great museum shop with a range of creative books and gifts you won't find elsewhere imho.

I was reluctant to enter- modern art is not my favorite. However, this museum and its current show in particular were outstanding. The theme of the show was Food. All aspects were represented including information about how it is grown and processed as well as how nature contributes and how nature is threatened. I loved the quotations that were interspersed... We went here on our last day in Baltimore, and it was pretty cool. There are all kinds of weird, neat, different, and cool pieces of art here. We got there right around opening and while walking through we saw what looked like a little bar inside that may be open later in the day. There are set pieces and... More

I have seen most of the world's top traditional art museums. But this offbeat collection featuring little known artists was fascinating. We had a number of young people in the area say it had introduced them to art and many reported visiting more traditional museums after visiting.
