Fort Caroline National Memorial
Oct 2020
Fort Caroline commemorates a French settlement in Florida. The site discussed the brief history of this colony, and the conflict between the French and Spanish settlers.

The true location of Fort Caroline is unknown and the earthworks at the site are a re-creation. It's a short walk to reach the fort, which is located on the river. The fort is small, and there's not much to see, but it is a nice spot for a walk.

Slice of History at Fort Caroline
Aug 2021 • Family
Visited Fort Caroline while on a family vacation. Husband planned a history day so we drove from Orlando to Jacksonville for a day of history. Our first stop was Fort Caroline. We stopped at the visitor center and went thru the small museum area then headed outside to walk a trail and see the Fort. We saw a village typical for the Timucuuan Indians and learned about the Spanish massacre of the French. It was very interesting.

Do not miss this amazing historic site. So much to take in. Walk in the footsteps of early soldiers and area residents.

Not much here
Apr 2021
There really isn't much to see here. The fort is a replica and they aren't even sure how accurate the replica is since no bueprints have survived from that time period. It is also not in the location where the original fort was. The visitor's center/museum is currently closed due to Covid. There are some signs to read in the fort and the history is interesting but most people will be done in about 30 minutes. Not worth a special trip.

Cool little fort
Feb 2021 • Solo
The fort isn’t the original fort but rather a replica of what historians believe the fort may have looked like. It is still really cool to visit and walk around seeing what life may have been like.

Free and fun
Jan 2021 • Solo
I was in town for the Icemen hockey game and wanted to find something free to do. I walked the nature trail and of course checked out the fort. I was here in the afternoon and it was very busy. Most people had on masks and were socially distancing. I felt safe and recommend you check this place out.

This is not a large fort but it is located along the river. There were several demonstrations taking place the day of our visit. This place is part of the National Park Service and is free.

Dog friendly beautiful trails!
Apr 2019 • Couples
We love Fort Caroline! It’s the easy side! The harder side is across the road called Spanish Pond. Both are dog friendly! We’ve seen all kinds of wildlife there. Owls, woodpeckers, skinks, Racoons, turtles, tortoises, an assortment of birds & a tiny harmless green snake.

French Settlement History
Feb 2020 • Couples
We visited Fort Caroline NM as part of our trip to Timucuan Preserve. We happened to hit it on a day when they were using traditional methods to burn out a dugout canoe. We were able to chat with the gentleman doing the work and learned a lot about the Timucuan people. We walked further down the trail to the recreation of the fort. It was striking to see how small it would have been to have housed hundreds of people. Plaques stationed around tell the history. Also, the visitor center has excellent exhibits detailing the history of the fort and the region. There is a 2-mile nature trail leading from the fort and looping back to the parking area. It was beautiful back there and surprisingly hilly. This is a must-see spot in the Jacksonville area!
