The "badlands" are a confluence of volcanic lava flows and classic sandstone landscape. The hikes around the volcanic areas at Lava Falls and El Calderon are fascinating and fun. La Ventara is a sandstone arch the parks in Utah would be proud of. Well worth...More

The lava formations are fascinating. I hiked the Zuni-Acoma trail; it is well worth the trip if you are secure on your feet. "Big Tubes" is a must-visit spot if you love vulcanology or like to explore caves. Most interesting and extensive lava field I...More

My husband and I visited for a few hours and loved the stunning drive and scenery. We walked the lava flow walk after exploring the sandstone bluffs. Beautiful park to visit if in the area.

I have been to around 20 different national park service run sites this year, and Malpais was definitely a bit of a disappointment. It is very spread out which makes it much harder to get to the different areas of the park. The lava flow...More

There is A LOT to see and learn about. Will have to return soon as we were not prepared to invest that much time. Even with just a stop in we enjoyed memorable experiences.

A Dead Cauldron volcano that left massive lava flows and tubs through out this region which help make up its unique landscape. It also provided a great place for bats to live and mate. Come and see this great place and its beauty.

This is our third visit to this monument but love it each and every time. You get the opportunity to hike to the top and then go around the rocks and come down the other side. It is strenuous but well worth it!!!! There are...More

We had a great visit to El Malpais this summer. It is very lightly traveled compared to some of the "heavy hitter" attractions in the southwest. Scenic cliffs, lava tubes and fun hikes. We probably enjoyed the sandstone cliffs the most as our kids were...More

I was not going to visit El Malpais after I had just visited El Morro. The volunteer said that they were two very different parks. Boy was she correct and I'm so glad I took her advice. I did not realize that we had such...More

Really enjoyed the National Monument. The material available was informative and the scenery beautiful with the lava areas most interesting. Great place to hike and soak up the area.

It's not a clear cut answer from visiting the website(s) and you should probably call. El Malpais is divided between NPS and BLM so there may be different rules in the two areas.

I agree with JerryH990. 3 hours should be enough to tour the monument. As Jerry said, the Lava hike is very interesting, but the footing is very uneven and you need to be careful to follow the trail markers. Good hiking... More

The Park area is very slightly south and very slightly east of Grants, NM. The turnoff is easy to miss if you are traveling I-40 and zipping along at the speed limit. Especially if many trucks are on the road. What I... More
