Great side trip, worth it

We've passed this exit so often and finally stopped to view the ice cave. Yes, it was worth it. We started at the old trading post, built in the 1930's, which has artifacts and... read more

We ventured out on a nice day in march not knowing what to expect. I asked a few questions at the trading post/old bar and immediately realized that i was talking to a 4th generation owner of this property. The owners were very nice and filled me up with stories of the area and of this site, they were extremely... More

Too bad I drove 20 miles each way only to find out it was closed, even though the website said open. The area is lovely and did a hike at another trail but maybe put up a closed sign before a lot of people drove a long way for nothing. I wasn't the only one on that road, or the... More

We've passed this exit so often and finally stopped to view the ice cave. Yes, it was worth it. We started at the old trading post, built in the 1930's, which has artifacts and an assortment of art of the local Indian Tribes. We only did the ice cave walk and it took about an hour. This place is so cool if you like seeing volcanoes and all the neat stuff that comes with it. The ice crystals look fluorescent green and are amazing. Bought some bags of sand to sift. Found a lot of rocks in them (garnet, amethyst, etc.

October 12, 2016 - We left Grants, NM Holiday Inn Express, got off at Exit 81 of Route 40 onto Route 53 to drive to the site of the Ice Cave and the Bandera Volcano. One admission price covers both sites. I believe it is $10 for adults but only $9 for seniors. First, we walked to the Bandera Volcano... More

This area is privately owned but the entrance fee isn't onerous. The walk to the top of the volcano could be strenuous for those not accustomed to hiking on cinders and going up hill the entire walk. It's well worth it though. Great views, especially with the fall colors on the trees.

We spent a fun morning here. There are interesting artifacts in the gift shop museum. The hike to the caldera was pleasant with many volcanic features, cinder cone, splatter cone, ah ah lava and lava tubes. The ice cave was so different than what we expected but well worth the hike. This is privately owned and is a well run.... More

Great place to see a volcano but the ice caves are amazing. Walking from hot to cold is very strange. If you are in the area it is a worthwhile trip

Traveling with my 13 yr old grandson, this was a perfect side trip for us on our Route 66 adventure. Be patient as you drive toward the volcano and enjoy the scenery. The hike to the volcano was lovely with lots of spectacular lava flow views along the way, Suggest doing that first, then hike over to the cave to... More
