The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion", Gettysburg was the Civil War's bloodiest battle and was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address".

The late fall and early winter is my favorite tie to visit the park. I live within an hour and love to have this beautiful setting mostly to myself!

A stop at the visitor center at the start of the visit helps to set the mood for the grandchildren. It offers information, a cd to play while you drive the many miles of roads and visit numerous monuments and significant points of interest. The battlefield is spread across miles of land and in the course of a visit on... More

Everybody knows the basic story from school but being there and walking the land and hearing the stories of how so many died on both sides is a very humbling experience, and if you don't walk away with a deep sense of how much that war cost us then you just are not listening or caring about others or maybe... We walked through the Military Park in the early morning so it was very quiet and peaceful. The Park is well maintained and offered much history as well as sadness with the amount of deaths that resulted with this war.

If you are anywhere in South Central PA, make plans to spend a couple of days in Gettysburg. The Civil War becomes more like current events than history.

A peaceful location. If you have Union ancestors who gave their lives at Gettysburg, you may able to find their grave. Also a place to think about Lincoln's Address on 11/19/1863- one of the most significant and well-written speeches in history (NOT written by a Presidential speechwriter like today.)

Very few Americans will get the opportunity to visit the WW2 European battle fields. Gettysburg is a sobering opportunity to see where over 50,000 men fought for what they believed in. The Civil War challenged the very existence of the Union and shaped the country we live in today. The sacrifices made in three short days in Gettysburg can not... More

To live well in the future you have to understand the past. My wife and I are from Ontario, Canada. We are not history buffs at all, we do know you have to understand it. After visiting the excellent museum we only had time to do a self guided car tour through this park. It was very impressive and easy... More
