About
Shane Confectionery is the oldest continuously-run confectionery in the United States, established in 1863. The Shane family took over the business in 1911, installing elaborately carved woodwork, stained glass and curved windows to showcase the chocolates and confections made onsite. Ninety-nine years later, in 2010, the business transitioned to the Berley Brothers who own the nearby Franklin Fountain and whom embarked on a meticulous restoration of the building and business. Candies continue to be made on-site, with an emphasis on locally-sourced ingredients, seasonal specialties and old-fashioned quality. Beginning in 2014 a Chocolate Café was opened in the back of Shane Confectionery, illustrating the history of cacao in the form of luxurious drinking chocolates and brewed infusions.

What a cool and interesting place! The offerings were so diverse and interesting. I fell in love with the brownies. George was working and he shared so much about the history of the business, the different candies, and the beautiful features of the building. We went back a second time, but missed having George make us a beverage. This is definitely worth a stop if you are in Philadelphia Old Towne.

Great decor and history, fantastic staff.

Was happy to buy a $50 box of chocolate based on the experience and the fact they're all made on site.

However, unfortunately, none of the chocolate tasted nice. Would not recommend.

There was a wonderful staff person who made our visit to this shop extraordinary! Thank you for taking the time to show us the oldest elevator in the United States, introduce our children to the process of creating chocolate, and share your enthusiasm for your work. What a fun way to experience a classic confectionery shop!

Ok - I’m gonna say what lots of people think. It’s just not worth the cost. I stopped by for a box of mixed chocolates to take to Easter dinner. The large box (1 POUND) is $95. That’s not a misprint. I thought for sure I wasn’t reading their sign correctly - $95 for a pound of chocolates? I opted for the medium box for $45 - woman who waited on me told me if I chose mostly buttercreams she would cut me a break. So buttercreams are cheaper? Why not price them individually or per pound by type of chocolate. I chose mostly jellies and fruit buttercreams - she did not adjust the price. My husband’s taste test? Not worth it.

One final note, while my saleswoman wore plastic gloves, her nose was dripping freely, like a faucet. She was wiping her nose on her sleeve while packing up my purchases. I won’t be back.

The 2 star rating is because of shipping. The website for shipping is difficult. Just try to order more than one item of different varieties. After a difficult experience ordering there is no conformation item is shipped. They give an email to inquire about shipping. They do not answer the email, they do not answer the phone, they do not call back and leave a message, they never send a shipping conformation. I recall this happened to me once before a few years ago. And I recall then when I called to inquire whether they sent out my order, no one knew and they had VERY POOR communication skills to a customer. If my relative does not receive the order, which they were quick on the site to take my money, I will call my credit card company. The candy is good, good luck shipping.

I love this store!

I love all the early turn of the last century décor with its old gas lamps and original cash register. The candy was excellent. I had one of the their Liberty Bells, which was a chocolate granche and Whilly, which is a type of gourmet Three Musketeer bar with milk chocolate and caramel. I just had those two pieces and I loved the taste and consistently of their excellent chocolates.

The old fashioned establishment was like stepping back in time when quality still meant something in America. The staff could not have been nicer and the selection of fresh chocolate and candies was extensive.

Don't miss this unique little shop when visiting Philly's Old Town.

Of course the day before I plan to visit “Shane’s Confectionary” they announce a price hike on Instagram. The prices have moved up by approximately 33%. Was the chocolate good ? Yes ! Is the store beautiful ? Double yes ! And I am certainly glad to see that they are finally allowing inside visitors as this pandemic hopefully winds down - because part of the charm of the visit is to see the inside of the beautiful 19th century store. I probably would recommend buying the bags of chocolate which are priced lower than the assortments. I bought a bag of mint malt balls for $10 which are outrageously good. The small box of assorted chocolates for $30 and the 4 piece candy selection for $12 was probably a bad move and I should have just bought a medium sized assortment for $50. $75 for a large box strikes me as too much money. They have various bars too and I almost bought a pepper bar for $10 but at last second decided on a CBD 12 drop box for the same price which probably was my second mistake. In any event, a nice shop with decent customer service. Highly recommend a visit.

I got a quarter pound of double salty licorice and a quarter pound of sassafras candies. They were both super good. The sassafras looked orange but you could really taste the sassafras flavor. The woman behind the counter was very helpful.
