The shops and atmosphere are eclectic and vibrant. There are specialty shops that are worth visiting like Di Bruno Bros Cheese, but the entire 9th St strip that starts out Italian at the South St end and morphs into Mexican at the other end is worth visiting. The bonus is the street art and the nearby Magic Garden featuring Isaiah... More

folks have said there is not much going on during the week in the Italian market place. they are right about that. there is a mix of Asian and Mexican shops and restaurants as well. very disappointing after folks have recommended this...some posting in Dipasquale's in Baltimore to try the Philly Italian market and we did, but prefer to spend... So glad we visited The Philadelphia Italian Market! I felt like I was in Italy or Sicily visiting relatives! Everyone was friendly on the streets and in the stores! The young ladies in The Visitor Center were VERY helpful, friendly and extremely informative of the area! The pastries and coffee were excellent at Anthony's and the pastries looked wonderful and... Italian Market on the 8th and 9th streets - everything is Italian here - food, veggies, restaurants with pasta and sausages, manners, and such. No need to fly to Italy - everything is right here!

This market it definitely better if your a local visiting it. You just have more options. For tourists like myself, while all of the fresh meats, cheeses, and produce looked inviting, I can't bring it back to my hotel. Maybe I was looking for more specialty shops, but it was average anyway.

This place is not in the same league as Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, NY. Many of the shops appear run down. There's a few decent vegetable stands and pasta / cheese shops. Attilio Esposito's was one of highlights of our visit. This butcher shop has a wide selection of meats and the staff is helpful and friendly. The cop... More

This takes up a few city blocks. It is covered with street stands and store fronts, full of delicious looking food. Much of the stuff is fresh but there are pre-made items that can be purchased as well. We went early in the morning so everything was still being set out, but it was a nice place.

The only thing Italian in that area is the Italian Market itself - the surrounding neighborhood no longer resonates with Italian ambience. Despite that, it's still worth a visit. There are lots of vendors on the street selling vegetables, cheese, etc - and some harder to find spices. Additionally, some of the stores are fun to check out.
