Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

The penetentiary is a bit off the beaten track, but well worth the trip. Fascinating to wander around and understand how it functioned - and how it got increasingly packed with inmates as they built more around it. The audio guide was useful, but a...More

I am not really in to history but I found this tour to be enjoyable. The tour is self guided with your own headphones. It is amazing how our prison system operated back then. The tour was also enjoyed by our 2 grandkids age 12...More

Eastern State Penitentiary is an historic 19th century prison in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia. Having never visited a real prison before, many elements of the structure and development of the place were interesting. What disappointed us was the guided tour. We were led by...More

Visited Eastern State Pen. on a Thursday. Good day to visit - not too many people. Building is a great architectural find in Philadelphia. Tour was partially self-guided with an audio player. Well done. Several special tours were available that were excellent. The special display...More

We went quite a few years ago and enjoyed it so we decided to revisit to find it greatly improved! It stands out as one of the best and we've been to a lot! For starters you can now "opt in" and wear a glowing...More

Great audio tour. I didn't get the feel that the place was haunted but it would be creepy at night. I saw Al Capone's room. I thought it was funny that they had done further research to find out that Al may have had a...More

One of the oldest penitenary in the US. Enjoyed the entire self-tour .Provided with head set and punched in the numbers to listen to the history. Former guards as well as inmates talked. You could take as long as you wanted. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

We booked up tickets on-line at $16 ($18 with $2 discount) but found that the tckets were only $16 any way. Apart from the lack of a discount, a visit to the Eastern State Penitentiary is well recommended. You are provided with an audio commentary...More

Great historic creepy place to house the Terror behind the Walls haunted house. We ordered tickets online & saved some money. We did the quick pass option for $20 more per ticket but we flew past the very long line. So worth it. The setup...More

This was probably the highlight of my recent trip to Philadelphia. The self-guided audio tour was super informative and easy to follow. I would suggest spending at least two hours here. Not only do you learn the history of the penitentiary, but there are also...More

I purchased the day before from the Visitor's Centre at Independence Hall, which was cheaper than buying direct. During my visit there were plenty of visitors buying on the day, it wasn't overcrowded

Ther is stairs but only for one small area where you overlook the cell block. You don't have to go up to enjoy the tour.
