Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

Perhaps the most gothic stop on your tour of Philadelphia: ESP is haunting (and maybe haunted) and thought-provoking and well worth a visit. There's nothing quite like it anywhere else. The story it preserves is uniquely American, but the format reminds me of touring old...More

The system used at the Eastern State Penitentiary was the system adopted by many other countries prisons. The star shaped design where the Wardens stood in the centre and could watch over the inmates in the blocks of the prison was used many times. Al...More

This place was awesome. We did the self guided audio tour that was Super informative. It was well worth the fee. Hard to believe having to be incarcerated there in the 1800s. AL Capones cell was cool.

This place is incredibly interesting and the audio tour which is included in your entry price is excellent. I recommend watching the episode of Ghost Adventures which took place here before you visit!..The place is huge and has barely been touched to allow visitors to...More

My friend and I love checking out historical churches, graveyards and "ghosty" places. Eastern State did not disappoint. Lots of history, sadness and interesting stories. The crumbling prison has been around for 150 plus years and has a lot of tales to tell. Everyone gets...More

The audio really isn't necessary and it takes a long time for each segment to finish so you walk faster than the speech segments. We turned ours off soon after starting. All of the halls look pretty much the same with random out-of-place art installations...More

Unique place to visit! Enjoyed art installations, a nice surprise. Saw Al Capone's prison cell. Liked audio tour narrated by Steve Buscimi.

The wife and I had a great time walking around here, very interesting to see how the penitentiary system was developed. The self guided audio tour really added to the experience, would definitely do it all over again. They do a Haloween event that seems...More

It was a learning curve....A deep insight into how the world penitentiary system came about and how the study of the mind and human behavior developed during those years. The audio tour is very very comprehensive and very simple to understand....10 out of 10 for...More

Hi Liza, When I parked at the zoo to board the shuttle, I waited no longer than 10 minutes. It depends when you arrive as they leave every 20 minutes. Great eateries included with purchase of tickets online too. Hope you... More

Parking is a total nightmare around Eastern State Penitentiary. Do your homework and find out the streets you can park on, and the streets you can't. We lucked out and found a spot running along the side of the penitentiary... More
