This National Memorial is staffed by US Park Rangers. Granted, most are young interns, but they dress in period costumes like Desoto's men would have, display chain mail and weapons of the era, and provide a good description of the trials faced by this group of Spanish explorers as they faced the native Americans of this area. There is also... More

Came here while on vacation with our 6yo twin boys. Planned to stay an hour and ended up staying 4! Everyone--from the rangers in the visitor's center to the costumed interpreters outside to the archaeologists working on a dig project--were kind, helpful, and very informative. I love the jr. ranger program and the lovely booklets the kids were given to... More

If you're in the area it's a very nice stop. I found it very educational, tons of info about Desotos journeys around the island, interaction with the Indians, etc. It' s located in a beautiful setting on the Manatee River with picnic tables, walking trails-- and best of all-- it's free!

We have been visiting DeSoto National Memorial for many years. Sometimes to attend one of the special presentations about the history of the memorial by Park Rangers, or just to walk the trails and enjoy some of Florida's original landscapes or to bring our dog to run and play in the water. The trails are well marked and signs sharing... More
