As the largest natural and cultural history museum on Florida's Gulf Coast, the South Florida Museum offers engaging exhibits as well as educational programs that interpret the scientific and cultural knowledge of Florida, the world and our universe. In addition to permanent exhibits, the Museum features a constantly changing lineup of temporary exhibitions -- offering something new to discover with each visit. The Museum includes the all-digital Bishop Planetarium Theater and the Parker Manatee Aquarium. Celebrating its 50th anniversary year, the Bishop Planetarium is the Gulf Coast's premier astronomy education facility, outfitted with a state-of-the-art Planetarium and projection system with stunning multimedia capabilities. The Parker Manatee Aquarium is home to Snooty™, Manatee County's official mascot and the oldest known manatee in the world, as certified by Guinness World Records. Snooty shares his Aquarium pool with other manatees that have been injured or orphaned and are being rehabilitated for return to the wild as part of the Manatee Rehabilitation and Release Partnership.

It looks small on the outside but once you get involved with the 3 parts, museum/planetarium and aquarium you find it takes a lot of hours to cover. We spend 6 hours there and could have easily spend another 6. Saw two wonderful shows in the planetarium, the gentleman doing those presentations is very knowledgeable and willing to field your... Snooty is the oldest known manatee, and is now 68 years old. He is hand-fed, and has been since his birth in captivity in 1948. His mother had been injured and was taken in for rehab and give birth in an aquarium. His mother was returned to the wild but Snooty had imprinted on humans and, for his own safety,... More

We had a wonderful day exploring all of the aspects of this museum combo! Love, love, loved the planetarium and the 3 show we saw. In between the shows we explored the museum from dinosaurs, to exhibits of nature, geography, history and topped it all off with the aquarium. It was great to meet 68 year old Snooty the manatee... My wife and I spent a very enjoyable two hours here yesterday (could have spent more, but had travel plans). The manatee presentation was very informative. The museum had a wide range of items and historical subject material on display. Could have spend several more hours viewing. We did not visit the planetarium due to time constraints so I am... This will only take a couple of hours to wander through. Most of the exhibits are old and need to be updated and cleaned! The best thing is Snooty the manatee. Oldest living manatee in captivity. Kindof a sketchy story about how he came to be at the South Florida Museum but hey.....he seems happy.

This is a local museum that is moderate in size, but has a great range of exhibits. Our party included three adults and two kids ages 10 and 6. The highlight was the manatee exhibit which focuses on rehabilitating and releasing wild manatees. We had an opportunity to watch the manatees being fed. There is one permanent manatee resident, however,... More

Good place to go to get a bit of the local history. Snooty, the oldest manatee in captivity, is very sweet, and we gained a lot of info about the manatee in general. Really enjoyed the planetarium.

The museum has very interesting artifacts and is a great way to learn the natural history of Florida. I have been to two different shows at the planetarium. The speakers knew their material and gave a very entertaining look at the universe. The graphic displays were amazing!
