As the largest natural and cultural history museum on Florida's Gulf Coast, the South Florida Museum offers engaging exhibits as well as educational programs that interpret the scientific and cultural knowledge of Florida, the world and our universe. In addition to permanent exhibits, the Museum features a constantly changing lineup of temporary exhibitions -- offering something new to discover with each visit. The Museum includes the all-digital Bishop Planetarium Theater and the Parker Manatee Aquarium. Celebrating its 50th anniversary year, the Bishop Planetarium is the Gulf Coast's premier astronomy education facility, outfitted with a state-of-the-art Planetarium and projection system with stunning multimedia capabilities. The Parker Manatee Aquarium is home to Snooty™, Manatee County's official mascot and the oldest known manatee in the world, as certified by Guinness World Records. Snooty shares his Aquarium pool with other manatees that have been injured or orphaned and are being rehabilitated for return to the wild as part of the Manatee Rehabilitation and Release Partnership.

We went to this museum specifically to see Snooty and the 2 other manatees. We lucked out as shortly after we arrived the 3PM feeding took place along with a very informative and educational lecture on manatees, their lifecycle and their habitat needs. What we didn't realize was they also had a planetarium and again by coincidence (not good planning)... More

We always enjoy our visits here. Quite and relaxing with plenty to keep your mind active without wearing you out. Parking was very easy. Snooty is always a prime reason for our visits.

This museum needs to base entrance fees based on the visitor's desires, NOT a flat $19 fee. I for one had no time or inclination for the movie or planetarium, but I wanted to see the historical exhibits. No dice, they said. It's too hard for us. Just pay the flat fee. Well, I refused. Not going to pay $19... More

We went to visit on a weekday and it was awesome! The manatee show was great...learned a lot that I had no idea about! They have one resident manatee and currently 2 rehabilitation manatees. Other displays include a little something for literally every member of the family! The planetarium is amazing! Definitely will return!

Has been a staple in Bradenton forever. Good place to take your family with young kids to show them some history and let them explore. Planetarium is great to watch there little movies to educate kids in a fun way.

A great learning experience, brand new projection and sound equipment in the planetarium. Snooty, the only manatee collecting Social Security! Changing exhibits, and a neat gift shop.

Although this is a small museum, it is a very interesting place to visit. Enjoyed reading about Florida's history and seeing animal bones, artifacts and dioramas. Absolutely loved the planetarium; there are several different shows throughout the day. Topped it off by visiting Snooty during feeding time; very informative employee answered all manner of questions. This was a perfect place... More

This was a 2nd grade field trip outing of just under 3 hours, including an outdoor, picnic style lunch in the courtyard (the kids brought their lunches and the museum held onto them until lunch time). The docents made certain every minute of our trip was educational and eventful. There is so much to see and do, you will want... More

This is a wonderful place to spend with kids of all ages. My grandkids were 13, 11 and 7 yrs old. They loved the museum. It had a lot of kid-friendly things to see and do. Of course the aquarium with Snooty and other manatees was a big hit, also. We all had a wonderful day. We ate at Pier... More

We visited this gem of a Museum with the family as part of day trip to Anna Maria Island and were very impressed. The Museum was excellent for children and can be seen in 2 - 4 hours. The highlight of the visit was the definitely Snooty the Manatee. Snooty the oldest living Manatee in captivity (in his 60's) still... More
