This stop on our way back from Bisbee, was a pleasant diversion from shops and touristy places. We walked the trails and read the information and looked out to vast tracts of grassland bordered by the treeline along the river. Look for huge old cottonwood trees, a variety of birds and small wildlife as well as botanical names for the... More

Visited this riparian reserve for a few hours of birding today. The middle of the day in the middle of the winter is not the optimal time for bird watching. None-the-less, we were treated with sights of several species, including a handful of new life list species. Just birding in the vicinity of the San Pedro House visitor center was... More

Beautiful scenery and wildlife with unique birds, situated in Arizona high plains grasslands, surrounded by the Madrean Archipelago sky island mountains of southern-most Arizona.

We went before the true bird season so knew there wouldn't be too much to see. BUT, the San Pedro House was wonderful - there is a resident Western Screech Owl and a Red Tailed Hawk...they feed the birds so there's lots of them - would def go back!

I think that San Pedro House (near Sierra Vista) really deserves its own entry. It is part of the San Pedro Riparian NCA but the various locations have quite different characteristics: Fairbank is a "ghost town," the Petroglyph Discovery Trail is a great hike where you can find some petroglyphs and San Pedro House is a bird lovers paradise. Hard... More

The SPRNCA is practically in my back yard. I live eight miles west of the Hereford Bridge trail head parking lot. It's a long-distance trail that starts at the Mexican border, then meanders northward along or near the river. In the fall one can see lots of raptors. It's a popular spot for birders, equestrians and dog walkers. (It's also... More

Pleasant easy walk along the river bank. Saw a few birds, but I suspect not the best time for birdwatching. Enjoyed (own) lunch on one of the picknick areas.

Went to see schedule hummingbird banding. The volunteers explained what they were doing and the purpose of the banding. You should get there about 45 minutes before the scheduled start time to get a number to release a banded bird that is placed in your palm. The banding is scheduled for two hours.

The migratory path of millions of birds passes over the SPRNCA/San Pedro River twice a year. The walks along the river are great any time and really change with the season. For birders, if they choose their season, it's paradise.

If you want to see the San Pedro River, this is the best crossing to stop at. The walk from the San Pedro House to the river is short, and the river is easy to find. When we went in June the river was barely running, but the huge cottonwoods make it a shady and wonderful place to linger, and... More
