Numerous granite formations, some 70 stories tall, attract world-class rock climbers. The Reserve protects 6.2 miles of the California National Historic Trail, and features emigrant signatures written in axle grease. Idaho's only pinyon pine forest is within the 14,407-acre Reserve. Activities include camping, climbing, hiking, horseback riding, photography, birding, wildflower watching, hunting, and geological and historical discovery. The Reserve is a unit of the National Park System and is managed on site by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. The visitor center is located in the gateway village of Almo, which provides food, gas, lodging, hot springs, and authentic, rural wester charm. Castle Rocks State Park is also located within a few miles.

Previous reviewer is correct...feels difficult to find campsite. When reserving, they refer to 'AREAS' which you won't find. Most of the campsites are on one road, and sites are numbered in ascending order as you head uphill (good idea to print a map first). Some of the sites are a little far away from the toilets, so keep that in... More

This was a wonderful discovery. I will be back. I few tips if planning on camping. #1 Print a copy of the online campsites before going, no maps were available just sign boards of park of highlights. #2 bring extra water, sites don't have water. #3 In busy season you can find a spot non-Friday and Saturday if you have... We wanted a place to go backpacking in the spring and a friend recommended the City of Rocks. We'd never heard of it before but had a fantastic time. We saw more hawks and owls than people and were fascinated with the unique geology of the area. All of the lower trails were snow free (end of March); the days... More

When driving to the southwest, we usually rush down I 84 on our way to Salt Lake. This time, we decided to slow it down and look at some of the more obscure sites. The side trip to the City of Rocks visitor center and on to the actual rocks is well worth the time. Visitor center is small but... More

Thank you for taking the time to come visit City of Rocks National Reserve and for providing a review of the park. This year the area has received unusual amounts of snowfall followed by temperature extremes that have left the roads muddy and rutted. While the roads into the park are under the jurisdiction of Cassia County Road and Bridge... More

Went with my parents, wife, and toddler. My dad and I loved the Oregon Trail graffiti and the rocks were fun even for our daughter to climb over. There were campsites right into rock formations, some with windows. I hope someday we can go back and camp and hike! The visitor center was very helpful and helped us plan our... More

We went on a Monday so the visitors' centre was closed. We didn't get a chance to ask for information on the road conditions. We downloaded an automobile self tour and was excited about the tour. There was a sign at the entry point that stated that roads weren't maintained but the road was not closed. We decided to try... More

We love rocks so we absolutely loved this drive through City of Rocks Reserve. We stayed the night at the campground ($12.72 per night) and wow what a view we had right in the middle of the rocks! Have stayed here once before and loved it so much we came again. Had snow flurries while here in October. Loved climbing... More

We loved our drive through this beautiful place! It really was stunning. We went on a 1.5 mile hike called Geological Interpretive hike. The weather was perfect and the scenery was gorgeous. We drove through the rest of the park and had a great day. We'd love to come back and go on some longer hikes. This was a great... More

We went thru the City of Rocks Visitors Center and scheduled a Rock Climbing Experience. Price was perfect... $20/person. That includes the shoes, helmets, and climbing harness. Didn't know what to expect. The formation are great, rock climbers delight and if you have kids with you they will love running and climing also. You can spend an hour or a week. We loved it! We didn't see any hotels, so you'd have to tent it or bring an RV.
