Worth a visit

I walked through the East Village in March 2022. I focused on 2nd Avenue between East 10th Street and Houston Street. It is a worthwhile place to walk through with a lot of restaurants and shops. It has an "off the beaten track feel" and is worth a visit. I recommend walking on Broadway to Astor Place to East 10th Street and then on 2nd Avenue.

Not really a tourist destination, this is primarily a residential area

Since this is a TripAdvisor review, the rating is if you should visit here as a tourist. The answer is no. The East Village is where people live because the homes are nice, it is generally safe and it is not full of touristy stuff. This is the area of the city that the sightseeing tour bus drives though and the guide points out a few interesting sights but the bus doesn't stop. If you are looking for a nice place to live in NYC, this would be an ideal place to look if convenient for work.

The East Village is back. More and more local shops, eateries and storefronts are popping up making the East Village a destination once again in NYC. Stroll the streets and find new and inviting eateries, bars and restaurants opening every day. North of Hudson, South of 14th Street and East of Fifth Avenue. Wander through the Lower East Side or Alphabet City. The East Village Awaits.......

Not as touristy as Times Square

One of my joys of visiting New York each year is staying in a different area; they each have their own interest and characteristics. Stayed a few nights in East Village and found it totally different to West Village although it is relatively close. Nor can you just dabble for a few hours, there is much to see, lots of shops, bars , restaurants etc. but they won't all be obvious in the first hours. It does though feel less vibrant than say West Village.

This is a very good neighbourhood here.There are lots of shops and eating places around.The buildings are old and new. The Rhinos sculpture is beautiful.

The Last Three - Goodbye Rhinos monument at Astor Place

There is a touching new monument called The Last Three located at Astor Place in the East Village that is worth viewing if you plan to spend time in this area of the city. The new monument is a 17-ft tall sculpture of three bronze Rhinos stacked upon each other, back-to-back and hoof-to-hoof in a manner that quickly draws your attention.

The monument is the works of Australian artists Marc and Gillie Schattner and intends to help educate and raise awareness of the plight and eventual end of the Northern White Rhino species which was down to three (and now two) at the time of the monument unveiling two short months ago.

Sadly, Sudan, the lone surviving male of the species died less than one week after the unveiling of the Last Three Monument. And then there were two!

There is signage to learn about the the monument, the recently deceased male - Sudan and the last two surviving females Najin and Fatu that you can read while viewing The Last Three at Astor Place.

It is a touching monument particularly for those with concerns about poaching in Africa and parts of Asia and the bleak outlook of rhinos everywhere. It is well worth giving the monument a few minutes of your time and possibly spending a bit more familiarising yourself with the situation rhinos face as well.

Unique shops, bars, coffee houses, bakeries, a great place to people watching, and a variety of restaurants. It's close to subway, busses, and not too far is Washington Square Park....SoHo.

Hidden and Not Well Known Hotel Gem in Greenwich Village

We stayed at the Walker Hotel on 13th. Boutique hotel, modern, fireplaces in public spaces, newish with superb service, great dining room and fabulous shower (important in a smaller hotel!) Discovered fitness center too late!
