What a place!

We were here to make AMTRAK connections and it was quite smooth. The waiting area was comfortable and well ordered.

Sadly started at Union Station in Washington, DC, but trip ended here in NYC...walking out of the rail terminus into the station, which I hadn't been to in some time, what a disappointment. Hasn't changed in years. Still absent character and charm; still just a mess of shops and poorly utilized spaces. So much to do to bring this huge... More

Travel by train is more expensive than by bus, no doubt, but the ease of traveling by train through Penn Station is hard to beat. You can eat on the train, read on the train, use the bathroom on the train, and the train drops you right in the heart of NYC -- a short cab ride or walk to... More

Unlike Grand Central, Penn Station is not a destination. It's centrally located in Chelsea near FIT and Macy's (and essentially co-located with Madison Square Garden) but it's a place you go through to get to somewhere else. Nothing really here to see and no reason to stay. A comfortable way station on your way to somewhere else, with plenty of... More

If you are going to go you might as well go big. And the Penn Station subway stop is one of the busiest. Of course it lacks the transfer capability of you Union Sq, Fulton St. or even Times Sq. but it makes up for it in sheer volume. And hey, what's not to like about walking the cavernous habit-trail... I returned from Boston to Penn Station, the smell, the dirt and fast food joints make Penn the worst Amtrak Station on the East Coast. It's just a sprawling mess.

Hard to navigate, especially if you are doing the subway-to-train transfer. The directions within the facility are sorely lacking. Way too many homeless dudes that stink up the joint, and some of them are visibly under the influence of drugs. The food offering is mostly terrible - I suggest picking up something outside if you plan on riding the train.... More

This rating is a combo of the station and Acela train. Acela is the Amtrak’s high speed train that serves business commuters who prefer land travel versus flying. The train can run a speed of 150 mph on some areas making the travel and commute much faster. I personally feel the rate is very reasonable as well. If I ever... More

Penn is an extremely disorganized and crowed station. With 3 Train lines and the subway it is over crowded and people rushing around to catch trains. A visitor should also be aware the platforms are narrow when entering or exiting a train before reaching exit to upper level.

Staying in Chelsea

Neighbourhood Profile
Chelsea
Home to hundreds of art galleries, beautiful brownstones, and one of New York’s newest and most popular attractions, Chelsea is one of the city’s jewels when it comes to neighbourhood life.
